If you don't approve of attempts to sanitize history on the US's 250th birthday but want to learn more about the founding era, the state of the field continues to innovate & there are new books coming out like John's on Washington, mine on migration & @gauthamrao.bsky.social's on policing slavery.
My book about how Americans have remembered, forgotten, and manipulated the history of George Washington and slavery over the past 250 years comes out in April. And Titus Kaphar’s art makes it the one of the coolest covers you’ll see next year. uncpress.org/978146969352...

Which is always fun. I’m grading this assignment from this semester and by far the top two topics students want info on are:
- Epstein files
- ICE detention facilities
And I am so fucking proud of my students for paying attention and being engaged on what is currently happening. It makes me happy

Bragging time…in my Am Gov intro sections, I have an assignment where students have to file a FOIA request for any info they want from an exec agency. I’ve been doing this assignment for about 7 years now, and the single topic most students request from several agencies is info on aliens and UFOs -

I approve of this plan. My version riffing on Cocodaq, nyc restaurant: cheapish caviar, champagne, Korean fried chicken and banchan. Happy thanksgiving, Josh!

You as well, Virginia.

You too, Theresa!

Your favorite dishes might be some heirloom china or whatnot. Mine are these platters my cousin gave me a long time ago.

Looking for a last-minute traditional Thanksgiving dessert for your vegan cousin? This is fantastic, and IMHO, better than regular pumpkin pie! Simple ingredients, easy to make.

I have a FINAL deadline of Dec 9 to finish the last round of copy edits, so working part of today. Friends are coming over later so will have to stop and bake and put out a meal. Been writing this book so long I had deja vu of another holiday I was working on. But the end is nigh, in a good way.

The impetus was @karl-jacoby.bsky.social bravely watching and critiquing the White House/Hillsdale College accounts of the American Revolution. Thank you, Karl, for your service to people who care about accurate history. bsky.app/profile/karl...
Buckle up everyone--here is my response to the second video in the White House/Hillsdale college series on "American Independence." (spoiler: the second video is every bit as bad as the first one)
As a historian, I have been torturing myself by watching some of the series that the White House in cooperation with Hillsdale College produced about American Independence (tellingly, they avoid the word "revolution").

There are so many errors that it is hard to know where to begin. But I'll try

Thanks so much, Paige! I like to think I cover the history before Motomura's excellent book.

That’s 1000+ excess dead children every day. Every day.

In Vitale’s book, he writes: “The problem is not police training, police diversity, or police methods. The problem is the dramatic and unprecedented expansion and intensity of policing in the last 40 years, a fundamental shift in the role of police in society. The problem is policing itself.”

Did RFK Jr. ask this about the bear?
This is possibly my favorite product answer yet:

Q: Will this deodorizing spray get rid of dead animal smell?
A: Yes, but you need to remove the dead animal or you will need to keep applying it.

Same. Copy editing and proofing. Happy Thanksgiving, Karin!

Grim out there, but on this Thanksgiving Day, grateful to all who care, who try to make things better, who persist in being decent in the face of ugliness.
