i know this is a very touchy subject but i stayed in bed for way longer than i should have because i thought i had ME (which is the default form of LC everyone assumes) but i don't and now it's hard for me to, like, lift simple things and walk more than a mile from deconditioning and i'm very upset

not really wild I guess, just deconditioning living under slumlords for like 14 years

Hahahaha ‚altered effort preference‘! My ‚effort preference‘ is the same as it‘s always been, and as soon as I feel ok’ish and ‚forget‘ that I‘ve got #LongCovid, it kicks me in the teeth because I overdo it, yet again. Activity avoidance is NECESSARY and the subsequent deconditioning is maddening.

Although my medical file is 8 miles wide and filed with wonderful experts, the cardiologist I saw today said my heart was fine and wonders if my symptoms weren't just due to "deconditioning".

For future reference, deconditioning has a very specific meaning, it has to do with oxygen use & uptake, it can be measured, there are tests, and it‘s not just a random synonym for “lazy”.
When they say that, your response is, “ok, orders for stress echocardiography & cardiopulmonary exercise tests”
Discriminating Circulatory Problems From Deconditioning
Discriminating circulatory problems with reduced stroke volume (SV) from deconditioning, in which the muscles cannot consume oxygen normally, by gas exchange parameters is difficult.

Apparently the letter exposing the faults of the NIH study about "effort preference" hit a nerve. Here is the response.

2) The letter challenges the conclusion that ME/CFS is a "disorder defined by altered effort preference, leading to activity avoidance and subsequent deconditioning. We believe this interpretation risks reinforcing skepticism about the serious biological nature of ME/CFS."

These findings suggest that rehabilitation for severe LC patients should move beyond simple deconditioning theory and consider targeted, specific strategies.

Years and years of people driven to despair and in some cases tragically beyond by being told that they could talk and think themselves well, and that their weakness was just deconditioning that they could beat if they were willing to push themselves hard enough.

deconditioning”. In the article, the team elaborate by explaining that exercise intolerance can also be seen in highly trained individuals who develop long COVID or ME/CFS.

I got to the point where I only had severe pain with certain rotation movements though I still have a ton of muscle & joint fatigue. deconditioning maybe? But I also started getting cervicogenic dizziness & wondered if that's related. But no Dr cared really because specialties don't mix. 2/x

Day 5 no alcohol update.
I'm unsure which particular flavour of fatigue is kicking my ass today between Fibromyalgia plus whiplash plus deconditioning plus the little known "Sobriety Fatigue" many people experience after they stop drinking an absurd amount on a daily basis.
Did a 10 min walk anyway.

what resolved those difficulties was switching to a reclining pillow in bed instead of sitting up all the time but according to my doctor spending time in bed cause those difficulties by deconditioning my abdomen even though those difficulties are why I spend time in bed

This hesitance only seems to exist for chronic conditions. They'll give you a cast and crutches for an acute injury, but when it's chronic they wring their hands about deconditioning.

This got me thinking early on a Saturday. When discussing #deconditioning I’ve always assumed we’ve been clear about what the problem is but then you know what they say about assumption…this paper states the need for an agreed definition & criteria for diagnosing hospital-acquired deconditioning.

Had a severe housefire in October which meant I had to pack up what had survived, find somewhere to live, set up a new house all with minimal help. The only thing that slowed me down was not having oxygen on demand to my right leg not deconditioning, although that's starting now bc of my leg not #LC

Compared with healthy controls, children with long COVID (LC) have objective impaired functional capacity as expressed by a low VO2 peak (oxygen uptake at peak of exercise) during exertion testing, signs of deconditioning, & cardiogenic inefficiency.

Excellent new #mecfs paper by Mayo Clinic & #MEAction. Includes this brilliant graphic, which clearly shows that PEM is not just fatigue. Well done, Jaime! @exceedhergrasp1.bsky.social

Den hypotese er afkræftet for længst:
“Graded exercise therapy (GET), a proposed treatment for ME/CFS that assumes deconditioning and a fear of activity play important roles in maintaining the illness, is no longer recommended for people with ME/CFS.[6][29]: 38”

Extended waiting times for #MSK treatments take a toll on patients’ physical and mental health. They lead to deconditioning, increased pain, decreased quality of life, and, in some cases, irreversible deterioration. Early intervention and support becomes more and more important.
