It’s more than good, it’s *critical.* The more I think I think about the war in #Afghanistan, the more I believe we lost it primarily because we lost the support of average Afghans. And a primary reason that happened is the amount of harm we inflicted on them
It’s actually good to adhere to LOAC when waging war amongst a population that will be part of any solution to the conflict. To state otherwise is an admission that you don’t understand the environment nor the ultimate purpose of why you’ve taken up arms.
There is a strong sense on the right—perhaps it goes back to Vietnam—that the other guys never play by the rules, so why should we? It’s a convenient little trick of the mind that allows one to excuse the inexcusable. Very human and very deadly.
