We first note that hand-wringing about the decline in US college enrollments has mistakenly linked such declines to the price of four-year colleges.

But the decline is entirely driven by two-year community colleges (and by for-profit colleges). The four-year sector is the dog that didn't bark.

Yeah. Several years ago, the Athletic or Atlantic ran an article about the NCAA & it’s origins. Blew my mind. Article stated the NCAA exists only to enrich the NCAA. College basketball is the most revenue generating sport that they jumped on to control via negotiating TV rights.

Am I reading this right? Only 12 out of 232 schools are revenue positive (others have to give money to athletic programs, tho % might be small)? That’s just 5%? There’s more to it, than that (IIRC some TV revenue, but that failed for Pac12 & Big10 networks).
