Okay, I will preface this with the GIGANTIC disclaimer that I promise I know how this looks, and I *swear* this is not personally motivated: If you have an old #LiveJournal account, and it has things you still care about in it, download it or import it to Dreamwidth SOON. Details:

I want to do at least one fun/shenanigan-based bike ride each month. Not necessarily a race! (Trying to save a few bucks on race registrations.) Just to ride my bike in fun places.
okay let's do a thread of FUN ONLY, no-stress, low-stakes New Year's Resolutions that are designed not to make you become a Better™️ Person™️ but purely to increase the amount of happiness in your life in 2026

I'm going to learn Polish folk embroidery and I want to DM at least a one-shot of something

There is an awful lot of fietsgeluk in the responses to @gravelinfluencer.bsky.social’s post!

2025 wasn’t a great year for cycling for me, but I did pick up this secondhand hybrid (a joy to ride!), covered a good few everyday miles, and had some adventures.

2026 will be a better cycling year.

I hate these charts so much because they imply chatgpt is comparable to the internet or phones

You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet
In 2025, AI became pervasive in American life and the economy, with ChatGPT surging in adoption much faster than any other major technology in memory. @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Not a lot of riding for me this year; I trained for spring/fall half marathons and did one sprint tri. That still gave me 650+ miles on the bike, mostly in summer!

This year I’ve got gravel on my mind, racing and just riding. I planned a new local route last winter and have yet to ride it.

A nice thread in which an actual expert patiently explains why the Secretary of Health and Human Service is not simply a liar, but an especially stupid one.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stated that the 1918 flu pandemic was caused by a lab virus from vaccine research, a defective influenza vaccine. Let’s analyze what a lie this is. First, in 1918, 107 years ago, virology was in its infancy

The Detroit Chamber polled MI in 2024. 58% of voters believe avg student debt is about $50K. Consequently, only 8% of voters thought that a BA/BS was the "minimum to be successful in MI" and only 27% said *any college* was important to getting a good job (1/X)

I’ve been a runner for 5-10 years now, I’ve never been fast, but holy cow has it been good for my mental health (cardio too, I’m trying to not drop dead of a heart attack in my 60s-70s).

The best thing I’ve done in the last couple years, though? Walk the dogs for like 10 minutes every day.
+1 to this. i have taken to trying to do a 30 minute jog on the treadmill most days and it has done wonders for my health and general state of mind.
not gonna evangelize about it but tbh coming to understand the value of cardio is one of the biggest positive changes I've made of any kind to my adult life, for whatever that's worth

So glad to see this written about. It takes 4 - 6 (or more!) human labor hours of editing, mixing and mastering to make a 90 minute conversation flow nicely and artfully. Video-forward shows tend to excise this process entirely and the resultant conversations flow and sound like shit as a result.

The lecturer in question is our colleague in children’s literature studies. She is a brilliant scholar and from all accounts a gifted teacher.

This ruling is infuriating… at the end of the day, it is our students’ education that will suffer.
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.
Texas A&M won’t reinstate fired lecturer despite findings
A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.
