It's the most wonderful time of the year (time to remember A People's History Of Tatooine)
Although I do laugh out loud every time I think about @dansinker.com tweeting “That’s just how they walk, man!” about Obi-Wan saying it’s sinister the Tusken people walk in single file

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

“If the complexity makes measuring the water use of a given data center difficult and contingent, isolating the effects at the level of a single user or prompt is nearly impossible.”
new from me: are data centers going to wipe out water supplies? how much water does ChatGPT really use? and what's going on with that big correction in Empire of AI?

i went long on the conversation around AI and water, and how it's actually about what we want resources to be used for:
You’re Thinking About AI and Water All Wrong
Fears about AI data centers’ water use have exploded. Experts say the reality is far more complicated than people think.

These ridiculous mega-projects like "datacenters in space" (doomed by thermodynamics) make a LOT more sense when you realize they're massive Ponzi schemes designed to transfer wealth from pension funds to VC's through "fee stacking."

It's the old Assets Under Management con. It should be illegal.
