Three times now I’ve had the pleasure of listening to @maryrobinettekowal.com read first pages of writers’ work at different retreats. Watching her discover the work’s cadence and adjust accordingly, in real time, was a testament to the skill it takes to be a good narrator.
Text can be read an infinite number of ways, and these are acting choices that AI won't make, and simple prompts can't patch over.

Human narrators who understand the work they are reading elevate it into a dramatic performance that is more than just vocalizing text, it's a new work of art.

I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

Like 30% of the country is absolutely enraged because they thought they were going to be able to be utter shitbirds without anyone being allowed to call them shitbirds, but here we are, calling them shitbirds.

To clarify: this is the 2025 version, which means it has geopolitical updates through 2024. Which is what makes it especially relevant.
This book has been so soothing. I have probably learned more about the foreign policies that shape the world just in the first three chapters than I have in at least the last 15 years of news media. 🙃 It's helped clarify a lot of the absolutely batshit nonsense of the current timeline. COMFORT READ

I'd only receive UBI because giving it to everyone is cheaper than means-testing.

But while it wouldn't make a dramatic material difference to me, it would massively ease my worries about my son and members of my extended family.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

Purification of the homeland's population isn't a policy goal that ends well. There's a word for a government that combines ethnic cleansing with the demand for lebensraum.

Remember a few weeks ago when dude was all butthurt that he didn’t get the Nobel Peace Prize.
More saber rattling.

There are good reasons that the U.S. Constitution does not leave the decision on whether to go to war to the whims of one man.
