Oxford University Press has been trying to do a volume (same series as Battle Cry) on pre-Revolution North America for a long time - one of my old professors, Peter Mancall, has been working on it - but it's never quite come together, per my understanding

Big news, friends: on December 3rd, I'll be launching a brand-new history show, "Past Lives." Every episode focuses on the life of a real person from history and tries to make sense of their experiences and their world. There will be weekly scripted episodes and tons of bonus content on Patreon.

Two of my favorite books - 1491 is getting a bit dated now as work continues in the field, but its main theses hold up just fine, and it's still worth a read. It's been longer since I read 1493.

Not a bad way to understand him - he was by all accounts pretty good at working a room, particularly when his targets weren't versed in his grift

"The Verge," Patrick's great book on the era of financialization that made this all possible, rules, and in no small part because of how clear he is about the way that everything from purgatory to violence work was not just monetized, but financialized www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/patri...

The Spanish crown didn't even pay cash out of pocket for the expedition: They sold a round of indulgences, borrowed from some Genoese financiers, and turned a port's back-tax obligations into one of the caravels.

Even if Columbus had been right about the size of the Earth (and nobody really thought he was), he and his expedition would've starved long before they reached Asia by sailing west. The Spanish just thought it was worth a flier: The whole thing cost less than a middling nobleman's annual income.

It's the exact equivalent of being mad at NASA for telling you that your idea about Mars being closer than we thought is wrong, and then acting vindicated when you run into an asteroid on your otherwise-doomed voyage into space.

My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

Season 1 is about the lives of enslaved people from Assyria to the 20th century: war captives from Elam, Thracian mine overseers, Mamluk sultans, and the last survivor of the Atlantic slave trade. Season 2 is people we know from their mummies, bones, or DNA, and how we can reconstruct their lives.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

Firmly believe that one of the best reasons to lift is that it’s funny to be big in random places, and that belief is confirmed by the wildly jacked guy working the Matterhorn at Disneyland. Amazing bit, 10/10, worth it

There’s no such thing as “Antifa,” at least not as an actual organized institution, but repressive measures of the kind the regime is doing will certainly create one
