Language is one of humanity’s most complex capabilities yet people still think they can just click a button to substitute one word for another - & the AI companies would love everyone to fall for that misconception

Language = communication = psychology = human understanding = complexity

Folks @ciol-linguists.bsky.social and #translators #t9n we have a real problem if an Oxford academic (Fabian Stephany) has no idea what we do and is advising MSM such as @skynewsrss.bsky.social incorrectly like this. I just hope he’s been misquoted 1/2

Same here. I've also only used the 116 117 service, when there was no way to get myself or my parents to the doctor.

The first time I ever called 116 117, because my Mom had what turned out to be a gallstone wedged where it shouldn't be, the young doctor who came to see her said, "Oh, but this lady is really sick." - I said, "Well, why do you think I called the emergency number?"

There's a reason the 116 117 medical emergency number is popular. Because they will send a doctor to your house. I've only used it for cases where my parents or I were unable to get the the doctor otherwise. But some people also use it as a doctor on demand service.

Mom's doctor did a house visit once, when both my parents had come down with the flu and I had no chance to get them to the doctor's office.

The weird thing about the Hotel New World disaster is that I didn't hear about it until I was an adult, even though my Dad worked in Singapore in 1982/1983 and his office was near Serangoon Road, so we must have gone past the hotel lots of times.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Worse, then once a year or so, the doctor's office refused to issue more prescriptions, unless we brought Mom in to see the doctor, presumably to check if she'd undergone a miracle healing. Which meant that my Dad or I had to take the morning off work to haul my Mom in her wheelchair to the Doctor's

It was a real pain with my disabled Mom who had several different medications she needed to take for the rest of her life. And every three months, someone, usually me or my Dad, had to go to the doctor and get a new prescription, since Mom couldn't.

I love the concept of Autobahn chapels and churches. Medieval roadside shrines updated for the modern day.

Nowadays, I usually make a photo of a favourite building or tree or statue, because sometimes a building will be torn down or refurbished beyond recognition and there won't even be a record of how it looked like.
corabuhlert.bsky.social
Lots of beautiful 19th century buildings in that neighbourhoods.
corabuhlert.bsky.social
But then, many people never even look at the buildings. When I was eight, my parents sent me to stay at my grandparents, because they were at a cruise. And I apparently stunned my grandmother by stopping at every second building on her street to admire it.
corabuhlert.bsky.social
I fully understand. In Antwerp, people were just walking past some incredibly beautiful buildings to go shopping at the same chain stores you find everywhere else.

In Germany, you have a plaque on your car which shows that you're allowed to drive into a low emission zone. I have the plaque, but it's not recognised in Belgium.
corabuhlert.bsky.social
Though curse the otherwise lovely city of Antwerp for implementing a low emission zone, which requires online registration that is nigh impossible for foreign drivers to use, especially if you don't know it exists.
