“One doesn’t become a witch to run around being harmful, or to run around being helpful either, a district visitor on a broomstick. It’s to escape all that - to have a life of one’s own, not an existence doled out to you by others.”

Lolly Willowes, Sylvia Townsend Warner

What Gareth said.

NOTHING sells books better than the enthusiasm of a friend or someone whose opinion you trust who has read it.

(Which is not to say that publishers should rely on it.)

Word of mouth is important to a book's success. So, if you'd like to see the authors who wrote your favourite stories commissioned to write more, please keep talking about all the #books you love.

“I sat in the sun on a bench; the animal within me licking the chops of memory; the spiritual side a little drowsed, promising subsequent penitence, but not yet moved to begin.”

A reminder that E. Nesbit wrote the greatest opening to a ghost story ever.
THIS is not an artistically rounded off ghost story and nothing is explained in it; and there seems to be no reason why any of it should have happened. But that is no reason why it should not be told. You must have noticed that all the real ghost stories you ever come close to are like this in these respects: no explanation, no logical coherence. Here is the story.

"TERRIFYING TALES OF CLAWED CREATURES WITH MURDEROUS INTENT" is the sort of admirably honest and non-pretentious tagline that we could do with much more of.

OK, come on. How can you resist a book called 'Things With Claws'? 1961 Ballantine paperback anthology with a cover by the incomparable Richard Powers.

"The greatest tales are told over and over, in many ways, through centuries. Fantasy changes with the changing times, and yet it is still the oldest kind of tale in the world, for it began once upon a time, and we haven't heard the end of it yet."

A Flemish folktale says people never went near the dunes at night because it was haunted. A man decided to risk it anyway and was knocked over by a ghost who appeared as a headless horse. It stomped on him so badly that he was lucky to live to tell the tale.
