I worked in support, and I know what this is. It is a form of weaponized incompetence. It is cheaper to give bad support and anger low-paying clients than to actually fix problems.

Given that I don't move seven figures in product, I will never matter.

Every new email gets an automated reply unrelated to my problem.

I then have to demand escalation, whereupon I wait three days for a "supervisor" to misread my issue, and close the ticket. 😡

It took me fifteen emails across three months with Ingram and Amazon for them to tell me why SfW 4 isn't available across both platforms.

It seems there was a typo in the ISBN when i first uploaded.

Neither offers a solution. 😠

The greatest joy I get from my books is the letters I get, the young fans being unable to manage their excitement about the next book, the fanfic I refuse to read, and when a teacher paints my words on her wall.

But that's not what I like writing.

I write because I enjoy it. I publish because other people like what I write.

In both of these scenarios, the bubble bursts. I'm sure there are other paths, but these seem the most likely to me (at least on this sleepy holiday afternoon) and I'm curious of other people's thoughts.

Option 2: Gen AI gets very good and basically no digitally produced media can be trusted to be genuine. There is a massive trust collapse and people retreat from internet as a source of news and information excepting a few trusted outlets.

Option 1: Gen AI plateaus fairly soon. It ends up kind of good at a few things, and has some limited applications, but the costs and risks broadly outweigh the benefits once users have to start paying the real costs.
