I loved reading each and every one of these books - fantastical settings, weird and wonderful characters, and a gripping narrative had me delighted the whole way through. Kuro's story starts with a misfit who people didn't understand because they didn't care too, and ends with the strength and joy of found family. Stealing from Wizards is one of those books that so fun to read as an adult, and that I can't wait to share with all the kids in my life too.

What an ending to a wonderful series! Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2025 Format: KindleVerified Purchase If you've read the other 3 books in this series, you already know what you're in for. If you haven't, what are you doing with your life? Go read them first and then come back and read this. This book completes this series like a beautiful package tied with the neatest, most gorgeous bow. I'm in wonder. This book is just so well written.

Well Ryan did. It was page after page of building out the world and characters. I closed the book feeling satisfied and calm. A piece of my heart will always be with these characters.

He had been looking for the dragon somewhere in the room. But the dragon was the room. Kuro had to spin to take her all in. Her body circled the cavern three times, a serpentine form interrupted only briefly by four muscular limbs. What he had initially believed were crystalline formations on the walls of the cave were her scales. Each one was like a cut gem: a scalloped, polished, iridescent jewel—shimmering like the veil in the light of the glowing gold. Together, the overlapping scales formed a mosaic of blues and greens, whites and reds, like swirls of ocean currents wrestling with flowers in the wind. Her head, he was not prepared for and found himself disbelieving it even as he gazed into her astonishing eyes. Her irises were a landscape of gold, copper, and bronze ridges around vertical slitted pupils of perfect black, bottomless wells of darkness. Scaled lips were pulled back to expose a menacing grin of curved, pointed, interlocking teeth, each easily as long as he was tall. Twisting elegant horns gave her a crown of ivory spirals, and a frill of extra-long scales about her neck looked almost like a lion’s mane made of cut glass. She was magnificent, monstrous, beautiful, and incomprehensibly large.

I'm sad this is the last book because I've been following Kuro's story from the start and I've grown accustomed to learning more about his world. I pretty much cried for the ending because of all the good feelings it left me with, especially the themes f chosen family and Kuro finally taking ownership of himself in the best way. I'm going to miss all the characters but I will definitely be revisiting via the audiobook when it's ready!

When I started, eight years ago, I couldn't imagine what Stealing from Wizards would become. It was a brain worm I needed to get out on paper. Four books later, the series is wrapping up and I couldn't be prouder of it.

Sure sure, but have you considered Toad Ointment?

It's good for basically everything.
Page from an old recipe book. Text reads: 13. Toad Ointment. - For sprains, strains, lame-back, rheumatism, caked breasts, caked uders, &c., &c. Good sized live toads, 4 in number, put into boiling water and cook very soft; then take them out and boil the water down to 1/2 pint, and add fresh curned, unsalted butter 1 lb. and simmer together; at the last add tincture of arnica 2 ozs. This was obtained from an old Physician, who though more of it than any other prescription in his possession. Some persons might think it hard on toads, but you caould not kill them quicker any other way.
