The Franklin the Turtle image that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted apparently came from a right-wing content creator known as "Maverick Alexander." Among the images Alexander has posted with the Franklin character includes dedicated to 9/11 trutherism.

I'm really coming over to the idea that elite weirdo groupchats have melted the brains of WAAAAY too many elite Dems.

Xitter plays a significant role here, but I'm pretty sure the main vector here is that all the well-connected rich ppl they hang out with have gone (comparatively) mildly batshit.

Have you noticed that the populist left and a hell of a lot of "normal" Democrats have aligned of the issue of accommodating white working class racism and bigotry?
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Its wild to say this sort of shit about Democrats when the current Republican/MAGA political project is built around cultural supremacist crusade that centers openly trying to destroy the lives of anyone who doesnt sufficiently conform to it

Assigned's mentions for this post are flooded with people who want to jeer at Biden so may I just say: When a Democratic former president makes a point of standing up for trans rights in a situation where he is absolutely not required to do so, for God's sake, just take the W.
6 Dec 2025 @rikiwilchins.bsky.social -- Biden, generally a lukewarm backer of trans rights as President, uses Intl International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference speech to slam Reps/Trump for turning trans rights into "political football...into something scary, something sinister."

I am angry about human lives being taken or ruined by the most corrupt administration in our history.

You are angry about women acting in Ghostbusters and Star Wars.

We are unironically Not The Same.
Peak bothsidesing: the worst of news & polling, taking a complex reality, reducing it to one word--"anger"--and a caricatured analysis--"polarization". This is how each fails democracy.
Anger is a defining character trait for both parties, new study shows www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Column | Anger is a defining character trait for both parties, new study shows
An updated Pew study shows that, with the change in administrations and party power in Congress, Democrats are now at record levels of anger toward government.

This continues to be why I will never give full legitimacy to the "gerontocracy" arguments. The way that Trump is currently being treated by news media makes it exceptionally clear that their main beef with Biden was him being Biden—not his age, physical/mental health, or fitness for the job.
It really is amazing that the president has a noticeable an unexplained physical ailment that is disfiguring his right hand and there's no reporting about it. The White House's line is that it's from Trump shaking too many hands! Something is clearly being covered up.

Early 2029 will be like a post-conflict society starting a campaign of de-Trumpification.
Could not be more contrary to American traditions. A gold-bedecked White House with a massive gilded ballroom and a government-created personality cult around the president complete with giant banners of his face on government buildings and official celebrations of his birthday.
When I saw the story in passing I thought it was the same dumb bit as the army parade, the fig leaf of using Flag Day because it happens to also be his birthday. But no, Trump's birthday as such is now an official commemoration for NPS free admission days.

see the thing about them all being the worst people in the world is that even when one of them gets killed they can't create a proper cult of martyrdom around him because the others get jealous he's getting all the attention.

Another gross thing he’s done is make saying Merry Christmas into this culture war bullshit where people can use it like a slur, I’ve always said it to people because that was never a thing you couldn’t say and literally the only time I’ve felt uncomfortable saying it is when shit like this happens
Next he’ll restore daylight and blinking.

No. They justify their economic suffering through the lens of cultural hierarchy. We’ve been doing this since poor white Southerners marched into the maw of war for wealthy slaveholders.

An insightful thread and a good discussion of the not just importance but moral imperative in right sizing our description of threats from hateful administrations like Trumps
"Demeaning" trans people is exactly right. Their goal--and what they're most able to easily achieve--is our humiliation. The imposition of indignities. They also hope that, as humiliations often do, it exposes us to ridicule. Perhaps even violence. (e.g. forcibly outing people on their IDs).
It's really frustrating that a lot of the media just sort of frames the Trump admin as "wading into a hot debate over trans issues that have roiled american politics" when it's like, clear that they are motivated by a desire to demean trans people
