I tell people that my great-grandfather, who came from Ireland to America via Ellis Island, would have immigrated illegally if he had to deal with today's system. This makes them upset but it's true.
The trouble is that people, Americans, have no idea what immigration takes. "Granny did it right." Sure. She came to Ellis Island, they gave her a train ticket. It's effectively impossible to come here legally now. You can't do Ellis Island again but there has to be mutually beneficial ways.
