On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.” A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

I know FEMA serves an important function but Trump has used it as a bargaining chip since taking office last January. As a taxpayer in California I should not be paying into a system that sandbagged us after the fires. They're not paying out after I paid in. Enough already.

Adam Smith (D-WA), ranking member on the House Committee on Armed Services, who told the Prospect that the $106,051 he received from the company has no bearing on how he votes. Asked if he would give the money back, Smith said, “If you give the money back … you’re saying, ‘Oh my God, I don’t trust myself’… I personally and strongly feel it undermines representative democracy.” He doesn’t agree with the phrase “abolish ICE” because he said there are too many interpretations for it, but he would support returning immigration enforcement to the Justice Department. He also said, “I don’t love how Palantir’s technology is being used,” but is more focused on Donald Trump, along with “border czar” Tom Homan, Miller, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “They need to be stopped,” he said. Keeping Palantir’s money but disagreeing with the use of their technology is “incoherent at best and at worst disingenuous,” Cullinane said.
