But what did you watch too old? I used to love any old gory schlock but even watching Alien the other day I was thinking “those poor people, they’re just trying to get their job done”.
What horror movie did you see WAY too young?

Mine was Poltergeist.

That's how you can tell human authors from AI.

AI will put in some em dashes, then apologise and take them out when told off.

Human authors will climb the filing cabinet, hissing, and defend their right to em dashes with a loaded stapler.
Em dashes, like anything, should be used in moderation. Check first with your editor if em dashes are right for you. 😉

Did you know that the guy who invented the ferris wheel never got to meet the guy who invented the merry-go-round?

They moved in different circles.

SCROOGE: You boy! What day is it today!
THE BOY: Why, it's... Um... I dunno. One of the ones between Christmas and New Year. Maybe a Monday? Tuesday? 29th or 30th. Something like that. Is that right?
SCROOGE: No idea. Fuck. Was hoping you'd know.

Dune has the same plot as the Westminster Dog Show: After generations of careful breeding, we have produced this perfect little freak of nature and now it has behavioral issues
Mom: Let's pick out a Christmas movie to watch on Thanksgiving. Which one do you guys want to watch?

Family (in unison): DUNE!

Who owns that many dice? That scourge of decent Canadian society, the dice smuggler! Who as you know commit 98% of all crimes in Canada.

Fun fact: Canada Customs in that era assumed all imported books were pornography. Dealing with them was so much fun.

Some ancient historians have argued that this is mere coincidence and 'Reply Guy' derives from the Roman tradition of the 'Gaius Replicator', in which the Senate chose a random uninformed citizen to respond to a speech given by an empress with 'o dei mei 🤣 roto arena ridens' or 'actualiter, domina'

thinking about forgotten computer sounds we no longer hear:

• the grinding noise of a defragmenting hard drive
• the BZWOMM of the monitor degauss button
• the squeal of an ejecting floppy drive
• the crackle of static as you switch off a CRT monitor
• the horrifying shriek of a dot matrix printer

This is pants-shitting levels of increase for any SRE (the people who keep websites from falling over), and the fact Bluesky (mostly) hasn't fallen over and the impact to existing users has been as minor as it has been is the kind of feat non-tech people don't understand how impressive it is.

Some numbers from the past 96 hours compared to a 96 hour period a week ago:

13M likes -> 104.6M likes
1.4M follows -> 100.8M follows
1.3M reposts -> 11M reposts
26k new users -> 2.11M new users

This really drives home how insane the increase in activity around here has been

Welcome to Bluesky :)

Is this on the same axis as the fairy/walrus split, or is it independent?
People can be divided into two categories:

When offered a Soup Tube™️ installed into their home, w/ different kinds of soups piped in from a magical soup factory at will, you’re either the person who —

A) says fuck yeah, soup! Sign me up!!

B) has concerns about the tube being faulty or unclean.

Same here. I know I'm missing a lot of cultural context, but there's a small thrill every time I work out something new in a message.
One reason I’m enjoying the influx of Brazilians here is that I get to practice deciphering (Brazilian) Portuguese. I’ve got French, Spanish, and a smattering of Italian, so Portuguese is within reading reach. And stretching my language neurons is one of my favorite things because LEARNING

A very helpful catch-up thread:
I have decided to post a thread to explain the current situation to BlueSky users outside of Brazil.
Yes, please. :) Anything would help. I'm ignorant. :)

You just arrived to Bluesky a few hours ago? Is that right?

Are you finding people you know? Or want to know?

Okay I think you are ready for this BlueSky. Let's talk cheese history.

More specifically, Yorkshire Dales cheeses, and how WW2 and rationing almost wiped out cheesemaking in northern Britain.

This is the story of the near-death of the world of one of the world's great cheeses: Wensleydale. /1 🧵
a cartoon character in a suit and tie is pointing at the camera and saying cheese .
Alt: animated gif: wallace from wallace and gromit being very excited about cheese.
