among the sad things about the global dominance of English is how lazy it makes native English-speakers about learning other languages - both as in general *and* because being a native speaker of a language that is such a mix of Germanic and Romance gives you an advantage with *both* those families

i find it curious how large numbers of people will stand on an escalator rather than walk a literally few steps to get an U-Bahn train departing in 15 seconds but they will run and push to get onto a jam-packed train rather than wait for the next one in 3 minutes
