when a dark secret from your past threatens to destroy the new idyllic life you've created for yourself
little yorkie named Rupert sitting in a big pinky beige-colored blanket, leaning up against a dark brown leather couch. there is a potted plant behind him, he's wearing a tiny terracotta sweater. he has a very William H Macy-in-Fargo expression on his face, like he's nervously smiling.

a funny thing that Marvel and Martin Scorsese could do is, he could take over the Stan Lee role of old guy who does cameos in every movie, so, you know, Captain America gets punched through a wall and there's Marty walking his little dog and he tuts 'Oh, for chrissake, *superheroes*' and so forth

This is an incredible thread, and if you live in Newcastle and want to hear more about it, next Tuesday evening at the Hancock, and book your place immediately (I can give you a discount code to get it free), I might not have to cancel it for lack of uptake www.nhsn.org.uk/events/richa...

Today I am mostly thinking about the popular inter-war literary genre 'animal stories written by fascists'. Join me.
Title page of a collection of animal stories by Henry Williamson: TARKA THE OTTER, SALAR THE SALMON, THE EPIC OF BROCK THE BADGER, CHAKCHEK THE PEREGRINE.

when I went to Reading it was the day I realised that the world had changed because I met friends at the train station and they all wandered off to buy snacks and things *without prearranging a pre-train meeting place and time* and it was because they all suddenly had mobile phones

this is a great YA book idea if you tweak it a bit, like, the kid stumbles in to getting hired to run the guys from the Bourne Identity or something, remotely. You’re juggling school and also the courier hits Bishkek at midnight, we need a team standing by to make the payload safe

My 15yo child, unexpectedly: “Yeah, I have at least 3 LinkedIn accounts. All fake. I use them to check on my teachers’ qualifications. I keep getting job offers because I ticked something that said I used to work in middle management for Asda.”

honestly by the time I saw Legacy I had forgotten almost everything I knew about Tron, which I mainly experienced as a child in the form of a disappointing novelisation, so it's likely it sailed right past me

Did you know that EastEnders had a dog that was effectively a non-binary character, because I didn't, and the nickname is absolutely sending me
Wikipedia page for EastEnders dog Terence

Despite being portrayed by a male dog, Caspar, who was later renamed after his character, Terence's gender was subject to dispute throughout their tenure and they were regularly referred to as both male and female, often in the same scene, which led to them being branded "non-binary" by fans of the show and nicknamed "Theirence".[1]

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

kids these days find this remarkable but they don’t realise that back then our brains were not 40% microplastics
