Enjoyed this! Funny instance of being shy of solving something because there were other paths open & I didn’t want to dither over whether or not I was correct (but dithered over other things)

This is a really great thread
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

Last day of Red Door Cafe in its current location. It’s only moving up the street (into bigger & more modern premises the staff are excited about) but it’s still bittersweet to say goodbye to a space I really loved for five years. I’ll especially miss this amazing free-handed mural by Theo Tannis

Emails are going out to eligible nominators (those who became a member of LAcon V by January 31, 2026, or were a member of the Seattle Worldcon 2025) about how to set up their LAcon V virtual convention account.

Even in this thoughtful and excellent essay, the exceptionalism is hard to shake. "Where else but in America could a left-wing, brown-skinned immigrant, a racialised ‘other’, become the mayor of a globally influential city?" Who is the mayor of London? Who are the mayors of Montreal and Toronto?
‘As the Swedish diplomatic historian Anders Stephanson writes, “the alarming fact” is that “everyone on this earth has an enormous stake in how the United States chooses to be and act in this world.” Not just enormous, but existential.’
