cool how google is just destroying decades of accumulated human knowledge and replacing it with rent-seeking swill. A government that existed for the benefit of its citizens might consider doing something about this.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

(michael myers on ross douthat’s podcast) ha ha, ross. that’s hardly a fair characterization. I would reframe the question. it’s not “why am I ‘killing’ babysitters”, it’s “why are babysitters behaving in a way that sets them up for these issues?” that’s something we need a national conversation on.

Not at all that you’re looking for an answer but for me I view it as the natural endpoint for American individualism. A fantasy where society is completely unnecessary and other people should just go away entirely
ive decided that i genuinely do not understand the current right wing ideology at all. no idea what you could get out of it that would make you feel good about yourself or the direction of the world you occupy. just really bizarre stuff

American law, it seems to me, exists to create a condition of constant titillation for people whose material needs are never unmet, but whose appetites have been teased into a state of ungovernable sadism by sloganeering & advertising that promises a return to a world that never existed & never will
Our survival is their failure

one thing thats kinda crazy to get your head around is not that the musk and thiel masters of the universe are ungrateful for the vast public infrastructure, public funding of research, and robust systems of laws and rules that made their wealth possible. it's that theyre too dumb to understand it

I guess it has been memory holed but at the time the ACA was being legislated there was a huge amount of effort and promise to "bend the cost curve" of healthcare. In that regard the law has been an utter failure. Healthcare costs have massively increased year after year completely unabated.

The ACA was a massive improvement from what came before it that saves lives. It also occurred when Democrats had a supermajority, THAT THEY ARE UNLIKELY TO EVER HAVE AGAIN, where they could have passed a law that did not leave Americans still wanting for affordable healthcare.
If you bash the ACA from the left because it failed to achieve truly universal health care, please read this thread. The law isn't perfect. (None are.) It still did a huge amount of good and saved many, many lives.
Are we doing "The ACA Sucks" Discourse again?

I'm going to guess most people hating on it from the left have never received a hospital bill the size of book; I put the apple there for scale.

That's the $1.3 million bill my kid incurred in his first ~94 days. Why does that make me respect the ACA?

Wikipedia is worth $10/month because if it dies so does reliable knowledge. Cough up if you can -- it's cheaper, more interesting and morally superior to Netflix.
wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...
