ALSO TODAY: J.D. Connor remembers some dead presidents. “But the wild thing about Garfield’s assassination is that there was nothing lightning about it. It took forever—two and a half months from the shooting to his eventual death from sepsis.” flaminghydra.com/lets-remembe...

I wrote about Ken Ohara's photography exhibition "Contacts," a prescient, humane, extremely fun collection of photos people took of their lives during a bleak national moment. I haven't really been able to stop thinking about it for weeks, now. It rocks. defector.com/make-yoursel...

Obviously it's disappointing that I didn't win the inaugural FIFA Peace Award. I felt like I had a good shot at it, and that there was a case to be made. But I'm not giving up, and I will do whatever it takes to win the next one. They're definitely going to keep giving it out.

I wrote about Rob Zombie's exhausting paintings for Luke and somehow worked myself around to finding them kind of moving.
"That these films, in which his stock company of lumpy-menacing ‘70s and ‘80s character actors (and his wife, Sheri Moon Zombie) mostly do terrible things to other people, are tasteless and ugly is something like the point." - @davidjroth.bsky.social www.welcometohellworld.com/its-what-mak...

This is obviously total thuggery, but, in my limited capacity as a short-lived former letter carrier for USPS: it is also a completely empty bluff. Fucking good luck to Amazon doing last mile delivery to every address in the US.
Exclusive: Amazon has long been USPS’s top customer, providing over $6 billion in annual revenue in 2025.

But Amazon may give up its long-standing partnership with USPS to deliver packages itself, which could spell disaster for the mail agency.

Obviously I am in it for idiotic sandwich discourse and goofy sports shit, but it's always fun when I can learn something I didn't know about before during an episode of The Distraction. This week we got all three thanks to our guest, ace science writer Peter Brannen: defector.com/another-side...

I didn't mention it in my bit on this story from earlier this week, but one of the most dispiriting things about this, beyond how predictable it was, is that all these elected officials care much more about doing shit like this than they do about the University of Oklahoma continuing to exist.
The Oklahoma House of Representatives gave that girl an award for writing a terrible essay? For getting a trans person fired? This whole thing is an op.
