Tesla's new Temu-grade EVs might have been a better deal with the $7,500 EV tax credit. But Trump's budget bill nuked that. Now it's worth asking: What did Elon Musk's failed bromance with Trump really get him, in the end? Back in @theatlantic.com with a new one:

The Worst Thing That Ever Happened to Tesla
Elon Musk’s embrace of Donald Trump continues to haunt his car company.

This week on Route Zero: So maybe the Tesla Standard models didn't land. It was still a surprisingly good week for affordable EVs in America, and most people don't even realize it yet.

America's Affordable EV Race Is Just Getting Started
Even as tax credits end, carmakers like Chevrolet, Nissan and Tesla are dropping prices fast. Here's what car shoppers and mobility industry pros should know.

If you want our great, in-depth coverage of subjects like China, batteries, software and autonomy, from a real staff of reporters and not a click-farm network, this helps us do that. IEVs is doing well amid a challenging time for digital media and I intend to keep it that way!

Two things: 1. I've been called a lot of things in my life, but "Tesla-biased" is a first! We cover them 100x less than when I started here...

2. The Trending stuff is a company-wide initiative that brings in new readers via Google Discover. Changes are coming on the UX side that you'll see soon.

I love shooting Hyundai's Ioniq models. So many great design details to highlight, even for a clueless amateur like me. This is the Ioniq 5 XRT and it's not the trim I'd buy, but it's a super interesting and visually striking one.

Great report from @cablenews.bsky.social about how Volvo flubbed its software-driven reset by being married to legacy automaker tactics: “If you want to really fill the car with a lot of attractive software, it cannot be done by buying boxes from suppliers."

In retrospect, the modern EV tax credits were effective but flawed. As they come to an end, they reveal that an industry hammered by tariffs and no longer facing fuel economy rules will be slow to change course.

EV Tax Credits Are Over. Here's How To Think About What's Next
The electric vehicle tax credits are going away in the U.S., and so are fuel economy penalties. But here's why it's smart to bet on electric mobility anyway.

“Consumer opinion has changed a little bit on BEVs. And consumer choice is dominant.” Which is easy to say when you tried making BEVs for exactly five minutes, and they weren't good.

It's Friday, which means another edition of Route Zero. I'm digging into the hype around extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs. Are they the answer to America's EV slowdown, or a dead-end? Subscribe for free to see who's making moves in the EREV space:
