If cheese is not the answer to what ails me, is it possible that I just haven’t tried *enough* cheese yet? 🧀

I am back from leave! Which means the return of the academic selfie. Earlier in the week it was briefly cool enough to wear my new check wool ensemble, but now we are back to more summery temperatures.

TFW the book you were looking for was propping up your laptop the whole time.

There is so much luck in academia. We're told to just ride it out, take the rough with the smooth.

But sometimes you get a run of bad luck or an event hits so hard that it becomes existential.

There's only so much bad luck a person can take before they run out of road and have to leave academia.

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

Conor Gearty died a month ago yesterday. He was deeply committed to human rights law without idealising it. He recognised its power & value while acknowledging its limitations (& those of the people engaging with it). He was also an exceptional lawyer. This is a fitting final piece in the @lrb.co.uk

Good point, well made. Thanks, I’ll take that on board.

I agree. Illegal situations can stand for a very long time. What I find interesting though is that the long duration of the established facts on the ground in Northern Cyprus has *not* led to recognition and legalization, and eg naive Brits who try to invest there still get caught up in litigation.

djag2.bsky.social
… investment and anyone who has bought real estate in Northern Cyprus has found themselves sued by the legal, dispossessed owners. Mere physical occupation without recognised legal sovereignty may give you quite limited control in practice and may well open your citizens to foreign litigation. 2/2

djag2.bsky.social
A quick thought on one small but important way western states recognising Palestine is not merely a symbolic gesture. The relevant comparison is the illegal Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus. This is entirely unrecognised by any state but Türkiye. As a consequence there’s no inbound 1/2

In fairness, the average quality of housing throughout Australia is pretty terrible from a heat efficiency point of view. But Sydney is where I’ve noticed it most.

djag2.bsky.social
Sydney has to be one of the few places I’ve lived where the climate was so benevolent that you seldom needed an overcoat outdoors, but the housing stock was so terrible that you frequently wanted one indoors.

Academic selfie: very pleased with my new trouser and waistcoat set. Made from fabric I found at Weft and Warp and run up by Hoa Lu tailoring, two fine Canberra businesses.

For very important reasons what the IDF did was not piracy (as that would absolve Israel of responsibility by saying the people involved were mutineers). It was unlawful for so many reasons (see Called to the Bar ep on the last flotilla interdiction) but not piracy

“Professor Guilfoyle what did you mean when you wrote: cabbage feta dill jasmine rice?”

“I meant a tasty and delicious salad.”

As my first mentor in litigation put it – never commit anything to writing you are not prepared to read out under oath in court.
