In 1811-12, the Luddites attempted to resist some of the first waves of machine-industrialisation. They were crushed.

20 years later "pauper apprentices" (= orphan children) were being SOLD to factory-owners as cheap labour.

Think on, dear hearts, think on.
Oh no the Governor of the Bank of England compared AI to the Industrial Revolution

it was I think better when there were ways for people who hate being on screen to make a creative living

I don’t think it’s an improvement that we’re creating a culture where everyone creative also has to be hot

Re-posting with alt text because the post accompanying this is obviously wrong, it's clearly a picture of a woman on a Crosscountry train having found a place to sit on the floor and read, her coffee cup beside her, folks queuing for the loo behind her

Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

I made a Chrome extension that swaps Times New Roman for Calibri on every site or just .gov. It also had Open Sans and Open Dyslexic, because f**k these people.

I’m waiting for Google’s approval for it to install automatically, but you can download it and install it in 90 seconds. Instructions 👇

based on how often the naughty teens of major cities throw the rentable scooters directly into the river i've formed a theory that the many iron age swords and cauldrons found in lakes around europe that we've previously assumed were ceremonial and sacrificial in nature were in fact thrown by teens

One thing to know about Magistrates is that the qualifications for becoming one are: 1) be aged between 18-74, 2) be literate, and 3) be ‘of good character’ (no previous convictions or bankruptcy)

If you’re up for it, you can help beat bias in the system by entering it
Can't believe they're going to end trial by jury. It's one of our most fundamental rights. Literally Magna Carta stuff.

Good read. Unlike me, the writer still welcomes AI in principle (so if you resent us Luddites, still read it), but recognises how it's changing human cognitive processes. I am always glad to see this being given attention.

Good thread on misguided "inclusivity" but I'll just hijack this bit to say: Ugly Christmas Sweaters are a terrible terrible fake tradition that I resent deeply. They weren't a thing until Bridget Jones, afaik? And now the shops are full of them and my kids want them and it's SO FREAKING WASTEFUL
Until a few years ago, ugly holiday sweaters didn’t exist. They’re ugly Christmas sweaters, with some generic Jewish iconography to be “inclusive.” But the truth is, when I have to buy one to wear to a work party, I feel like I’m in another culture’s drag.

Ralph Fiennes, and to nearly the same extent, Christian Bale.

I agree on Leo also, but he's in the Christian Bale slot, where it's just a little bit less intolerable.
What actor are you so (rationally or not) repulsed by that their work, no matter how good, is unwatchable to you?
