I'm too tired to be witty right now, but you might get lucky and catch me at the right level of sleep deprivation. Law, fighting fascism, travel, cats. A republic if we can keep it, indeed.

I am incredibly sick of living through a time in this country that is both historically evil and historically stupid.

Genuinely hilarious that Bill Kristol has more moral clarity in the moment than Chuck Schumer
If I told 14 year old me this had happened hed say "time to cut back on the beer old man."

A truly extraordinary document. Judge Rodriguez throws out the indictment because "the Government’s conduct is so shocking to the universal sense of justice that it should be deprived of the opportunity to prosecute the Defendant." Hard to count all the different ways ICE lied throughout this case.
As Marcy notes, @seamushughes.bsky.social is doing such critically important work. Here, folks should read Judge Rodriguez's opinion (to which Marcy links) for themselves.

It's a chilling account of what's become standard practice in ICE arrests these days—from a district judge who is no firebrand.
This dismissal opinion on a failed ICE arrest that @seamushughes.bsky.social found is worth reading in its entirety. Come for the debunking of DHS "fiction," stay for the snark about wiener dog, but definitely take time to read the 18 USC 111 analysis.

Put another way:

Trump's DOJ is sending their No. 3 lawyer (a go-to attorney for Trump's allies) to shield their No. 2 lawyer (Trump's criminal defense attorney) from a subpoena, all in an effort to argue that Kilmar Abrego Garcia isn't being vindictively prosecuted by the Trump administration.
Notable:

Stanley Woodward, who repped Trump's co-defendant in the classified docs case, just signed a brief attempting to quash a subpoena to Todd Blanche in Kilmar Abrego Garcia's case.

He's a go-to lawyer for Trump allies turned DOJ No. 3. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

They're calling him the most French man in history
A French cyclist survived for three days after a horrendous 130-foot fall into a ravine, kept alive by the bottles of red wine he had in his shopping bag, police said.

Let's play, "Who said it: Donald Trump, the Grand Wizard of the Klan, Pamela Geller, or Andrew Cuomo?"
So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."

Can't overstate how fucked up it is that unraveling what is arguably the greatest achievement in the history of humanity is now a motivating issue of one of the two dominant parties in the U.S.
FL is moving forward w/ plan to end all childhood vaccine mandates. Starting with hepatitis B, chickenpox, and the bacteria causing meningitis and pneumonia. Then next year GOP FL legislature is expected to revisit 1977 law re: whooping cough, measles, polio, rubella, mumps, diphtheria, and tetanus.

Our president decides to deploy troops to a different city in america because his staffers post kermit gulag every other day and say "this is what's happening in [major city] right now" so this is less speculation and more obvious truth
my most conspiracy brained thought right now is “ai slop isn’t just out there to make number go up for people who are already rich, it doubly serves the purpose of lowering the availability of useful information transmission in a fascist state”

Writers, it's always a good idea to print out your work that appears online. I have a whole year's worth of work lost in the internet ether.
Did you know that, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 are no longer accessible?
When Online Content Disappears
A quarter of all webpages that existed at one point between 2013 and 2023 are no longer accessible.

1/x (but short, I promise): If you read (or have already read) this WSJ piece, the context you may be missing is that for at least 100 years people have been saying that they were trans (using varied language) and cis ppl responded by spending HUGE effort proving that they aren't really trans.
Yikes! This is fake news. More trans kids felt safe to come out, now they don't. Government's are painting a target on the back of trans kids backs, forcing them tk stay in the closet.

Speaker Johnson admits Trump & Republicans are forcing millions of kids to go hungry for political leverage. He says funding SNAP would "reduce the pressure" on Democrats. Disgusting.
BASH: Even Hawley says you should move money around to feed people. Why not consider it?

JOHNSON: Because if you deviate from the goal of reopening the entire govt, Schumer & the radicals will continue to play games. If you do just part of this, it will reduce the pressure for them to do all of it

I realize this isn't breaking news but it's insane that voting has begun and Chuck Schumer — leader of the Democratic party — is straight-up refusing to endorse the Democratic nominee for mayor, whose opponent is an alleged serial sexual abuser funded by Trump-allied billionaires

This week the police in Rio executed what is being called the most deadly massacre in Rio’s history. Black organizations are demanding accountability and the UN just called for an investigation. But it will take a lot to get real processes of accountability going.
If, like me you don’t speak Portuguese, you can translate pretty easily - and thus read more or less directly from one of the largest Black media organizations in Brazil.

We're seeing a massive institutional deportation and state violence apparatus being built and it honestly feels like people dont grasp the sheer scale of it and what already is in place. For every horrific video of masked feds kidnapping people there are so many people pushing paper to help.
NEW: ICE is planning to build a shadow deportation network in Texas. A proposal outlines a 24/7 transport operation run by armed contractors—turning Texas into the logistical backbone of an industrialized deportation machine.
