I think this sums up what I've been trying to do in all my writing about games over the last 20 years. Games are not just a commodity, they're cultural artifacts with cultural value. They reflect our culture no less than books and film, and in many cases lead our culture.
But compared to the other screen industries, they don't have access to "cultural" funding. With one exception - Wales - all the other funding for games comes via the "economic" path that requires growth. Games MUST sell, not merely be "needed" the way books or films are. 6/9

My favourite thing about this interview is the mention of Miyamoto walking through Nintendo's offices just watching people work like Paul Hollywood in the Bake Off tent. The idea of such a workplace is simultaneously delightful and horrifying all at once.
Nintendo’s games feel special in a way other developers can’t quite imitate. But why? According to @mackeza.bsky.social, author of Super Nintendo, an upcoming book about the Mario and Zelda maker, it’s because teams are intergenerational
