part of what got south korea out under the thumb of authoritarian dictatorships and to real elections (1987) and free and fair ones (1992) were large, mass protests and demonstrations.

which is such an anodyne way of describing what happened. it makes it sound bloodless.

it wasn't.
my country elected a fascist 10 years ago and he's now arguably the most unpopular pm we've ever had and we still can't get rid of him because once a fascist gets into power, typically you do not get them out without a whole lot of mass violence. Don't be like us.

Not only is the Reason crowd not a good one to hold up as being prescient about Trump, plenty of other groups were actually vocal about this. Huge swaths of the left were very much sounding the alarm in 2016, to say nothing of 2024; even a bunch of right-wingers feared (emphasis on past tense) Trump
I feel like I'm losing my goddamnned mind.

trans folks predicted what he’d do and who he’d be with startling accuracy, particularly those annoying activist leftist trans that get habitually mocked and denigrated, but the people who own culture had already marginalized us so effectively that no one with power would listen

This is what I mean when I say the *entire* British media and political establishment needs to be dismantled. Decades upon decades of this, of all the important people knowing each other and caring far more about the political ambitions of those in their social circles than the lives of the public.
In the middle of a moral panic about sex trafficking so intense that I can't advertise a book about medieval history online and no one can access prom anymore, Labour's best and brightest are desperate to get on TV and let you know actually it is fine if rich people do it to poor girls.

wrt to some of the replies to this post, part of why the media has “moved on” is because it has become extraordinarily difficult to document ICE activity on the ground, outside of them arresting citizens.

Even the people who respond to FOX NEWS POLLS don't want a continuation of anti-trans bullshit. Fuck, Democrats better fucking learn.
The U.S. anti-trans backlash has not let up. But the good news is that these bills are increasingly unpopular with the public. Polling shows that people think anti-trans Republicans have gone too far and by a large margin (+22, according to a Fox News poll) trust Democrats more on trans issues.

Japan is a typical, developed democracy. Elections take place in an environment where the general public have a range of political parties to choose from, operating in a pluralistic media landscape, with totally free, secret ballots, after which the LDP win.
