part of what got south korea out under the thumb of authoritarian dictatorships and to real elections (1987) and free and fair ones (1992) were large, mass protests and demonstrations.

which is such an anodyne way of describing what happened. it makes it sound bloodless.

it wasn't.
my country elected a fascist 10 years ago and he's now arguably the most unpopular pm we've ever had and we still can't get rid of him because once a fascist gets into power, typically you do not get them out without a whole lot of mass violence. Don't be like us.
i'm trying to feel bad about fcb chicago closing but given that i still compare the turnover during my time there over a decade ago *negatively* to the mortality rate of ebola zaïre,

lol. lmao.

(but also, seriously, it's fucked that omnicom just bought out ipg. now there are three big agencies)

part of what makes airports like singapore's changi, korea's seoul-incheon, japan's tokyo (haneda) and tokyo (narita), and france's paris (cdg) regularly the "best airport experience in the world" is that the countries they're in invest heavily into infrastructure

the us... does not.
Duffy on what he's doing to improve the airport experience for travelers: "Maybe I want a workout area where people might get some blood flowing doing some pull ups or step ups in the airport."

one thing to consider is that in the era of american decline, american dreams will become smaller, meaner, and more meager while still being portrayed as bountiful.

exhortations like this serve as a kind of propaganda to remind citizenry to want less
NEW: Dr. Oz is quite literally telling his federal employees to eat less.

“You don't have to try every cookie on the holiday table,” wrote Mehmet Oz in an email to all Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services employees.

when you're a diasporic korean of 8 years old on your second visit to korea, your uncles may take you to the independence hall museum, and at some point you might see life-size animatronics of brutal tortures used by the japanese occupiers like confinement boxes

and you will have nightmares after
They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
Torture Techniques from CIA Black Sites Were Used at Alligator Alcatraz
Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

my favorite thing about british media is that it's so institutionally transphobic that "left" publications like the grauniad are *still* claiming that this is a victory for the anti-trans bigot s. peggie

Time after time, these tribunals are uncovering the abuse of trans people by 'figureheads' backed by far-right & anti-gender movements. Often these cases are based on dodgy funding, fabrication, prejudice, hate, and the egos of deluded zealots determined to eradicate a marginalised group.

The practical effect of overturning Humphrey’s will be that Republican presidents can stack the formerly independent agencies with their copartisans and SCOTUS will be cool with everything they do but when a Dem POTUS does the same Roberts et al will declare all those agencies’ actions unlawful.
In a memo John Roberts wrote just 4 yrs out of law school, he said the “time may be ripe to reconsider the existence” of independent agencies & bring them back into the executive branch. Now he’s poised to end what he has long called “a constitutional anomaly.”

When a group of blue state attorney's general submitted a strident defense of trans healthcare to Trump's FTC, no one in the media covered it.

No one, that is, except for @valorievandieman.bsky.social of Assigned Media, in one of our most read stories of 2025.

It’s very funny to me that countries are trying to pass laws banning teens from social media until they’re older and can “handle it” as if the last decade hasn’t been about watching rich middle aged men nuke their brains on Twitter and then run the USA via shitpost.
Dude. Yes. Alito and Thomas are of course the standout examples, but all of the Republican justices have tells in their writing and their questioning indicating that they are, to varying degrees, marinating their brains in dumb bitch juice
My theory, fwiw, is that Supreme Court Justices are not immune to Twitter brain poisoning. I suspect all six have horrific information environments and have therefore lost the ability to understand the people who don't agree with them.

all of the shit about how if you allow people to transition kids are going to be peeing in litter boxes was just the mirror image of the reality: as soon as you enshrine immutable gender difference in law you're going to have legally required Lady Meals For Her

one of the main reasons trans healthcare moved away from strict gatekeeping and toward informed consent & GAC is that trans ppl who were denied the means to transition would simply seek it out elsewhere
What did you think would happen when you restricted access to care?

Transition is a matter of free will and freedom. Trans people are going to do it anyway and you cannot stop them.

We are full human beings with the right to decide our lives for ourselves and no one has a right to stand in the way of that.

the balance hasn't remained constant, but people have long wrongly seen the NYT as a liberal publication that feels the need to bend over backwards for conservatives to fight bias charges, when in fact it's a conservative publication aimed at convincing liberals. they're more open about that now

Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."
