my feelings on this
a) the idea that you can't make a living off art is sad because it reflects a world where art has been devalued to a massive degree
b) the idea that work made as part of a creative industry is the only kind of real worthwhile or consequential art is totally ridiculous and false
If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

rich industrialists used to invest a lot in art as a reputation launderer (and some still do). but silicon valley believes that ultimately everything must serve the purpose of transforming society thru technology, or it needs to be optimized out of reality. no need to launder your reputation anymore

art definitely enjoyed a different role culturally in the mid 20th century than it does now. but also, to parapharse from my own blog post "The California Problem": what transformed film's status in society more than anything was huge, often violent shifts in the social and political order

HORSES is out here seemingly single-handedly resurrecting all the games discourses that died out because of gamergate and blogs dying. what a legacy.

Being trans disqualified you from being involved or having any say at all in the nyt coverage of trans people. That was true 5 years ago, and it’s true today.

It’s the definition of prejudice.
Ever wonder why the New York Times abandoned balance and impartiality to lead an old-fashioned newspaper crusade against trans equal rights?

In one of our most read stories for the year, @evanurquhart.bsky.social took readers behind the scenes at NYT.

Bias at NYT: Trans Former Employee Speaks Out — Assigned
Billie Sweeney is a trans journalist who was an editor for the New York Times until last year. Here, she recalls her losing battle for the soul of the paper of record.

to be clear: USTA kicking trans women off rec league tennis teams is not a policy "coming from the highest levels of government." it is a policy coming from the USTA. we need y'all to stop attributing all culpability to trump. you're laundering collaboration, obfuscating what is actually happening.

According to survey data from the DOJ itself, incarcerated trans Americans experience sexual violence at more than 12x the rate of other incarcerated people.

The plans outlined in the memo effectively greenlight discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people who are already disproportionately at risk.

i don't know about other countries but i think understanding the current rot of the US is no harder than to understand that we have a society where material accumulation is viewed as a moral good above all else and that anything that threatens or challenges that idea is weak and to be distrusted
December 4, 2025 at 11:40 PM
anyone else think it's kind of weird how disconnected the current US fash is from like 99.9% of American culture? their position is "America First in the racist way, but i also don't really enjoy anything that comes from America but podcasters and the occasional Marvel movie or country singer guy"?
December 4, 2025 at 10:55 PM
i think there’s this very American idea that to complain about something you care about means that you’re just a hater who has failed, and you wouldn't feel that way if you had succeeded. but over time i’ve learned how much of a lie that is: you can complain and hate stuff and be very productive too

as much as i don't like the term "industry plant" i think it at least gets at something that is true: that there is something fundamentally off and broken with the music industry and the larger sphere around music. it's not just Spotify or AI, although that's a big part - it's really everything.

as far as the mainstream political/cultural landscape it feels like we either have people who don't know history at all and just have a bunch of made up explanations for why things are the way they are, or people who are educated but refuse to apply any of that history to their own circumstances.
December 4, 2025 at 6:00 PM
agree with this thread, but: i wouldn't assume people have seen some challenging piece of art. so many gamers don't engage with any media outside 'nerd' spaces. likely a big reason why we're sleepwalking into reliving 20th century censorship battles is these people don't know the history at all
i cannot believe video games are having a massive controversy in 2025 for a horror work like ten times less explicit and extreme than antichrist. everyone's seen that fuckin movie.

looked thru a few album of the year lists and realize i have probably never been more checked out new music wise to anything but handfuls of bandcamp weirdos i stumble upon. genuinely have no idea what's going on in that realm and feel pretty happy about not caring at this point

you have my promise that every "best of the year" list or graphic i do will always wait till the beginning of the next year. none of this posting on Dec 1st bullshit

this post is so funny to me because it reminds me how much of us arty indie game types basically have always existed in a parallel ecosystem that never reached the gamer masses 98% of the time and basically doesn't have anything to do with them
