Horses, the unsettling horror game that was banned from Steam, tells a harrowing story you won’t soon forget. Our review: https://bit.ly/3Y8bWmF

Santa Ragione's Horses delivers a subversive, sometimes shocking, often funny first-person narrative horror that, while perhaps a little insubstantial, remains an engagingly unconventional exploration of some timely themes.

In the age of centralized platforms, you can get a reverse Streisand effect, with ban controversies prompting additional bans out of cowardice or middleman solidarity.
Yesterday, the Epic Games Store decided at the last minute not to distribute the game, after having previously approved a release build. HORSES is otherwise now available on GOG, Itch, and Humble for $4.99. www.horses.wtf

the HORSES stuff is obviously ridiculous and depressing, but it is also worth asking ourselves: who has benefited from the "games are art" campaign? it has certainly not been the artgame makers, whose work continues to be shunned and dismissed as "not games"
holy fuck this is ridiculous, how can we claim games are art if art is this scary to our two primary distribution channels?

ofc i do think games are an art form. but i also feel that that whole cultural battle was mostly waged by and on behalf of large corporations who wanted to lend cultural prestige to their multi million dollar IPs, and theyve been perfectly happy to stamp out aesthetic risk from their work and others

The additional context is that Valve is still killing a beloved games studio, still tried to weasel out of making a press statement, still didn't allow a second review, and still did not communicate with the developer beyond vague references to their terms.

Valve responds with "additional context" following Horses Steam ban controversy
Following Valve's decision to ban first-person horror adventure Horses from distribution on Steam, the company has provided "additional context" in a statement.

Bad news: no new @adventjs.itch.io this year as @mtrc.bsky.social and I have both been snowed under

Good news: if you missed either or both of the last two years, we've got two months of creative coding wonders for you! Treat yourself to a door a day, or open them all at once, we won't tell ;)

look it's not MY kind of horse game but I do think it deserves a look if you're into weird horror, and I definitely think its ban from Steam was undeserved (especially after removing the content that was presumably the cause for said ban)

We hit 500 reviews!! Faye will get her pretzel! That said, what we really want is for the reviews to turn "overwhelmingly positive." that means we need 15 more positive reviews to tick it up from 94% to 95%. So if you haven't reviewed the game yet, your vote makes a heck of a difference! Go go go!
Don't forget: If you've played and enjoyed Demonschool, please do leave a review on steam! We want to hit that "overwhelmingly positive" threshold. And remember, if we do it by the end of the month (5 days!), Faye gets a pretzel~ store.steampowered.com/app/1900250/...

Steam bans an artistic, daring indie game release citing some ridiculous indecency rules. Whilst the platform is as we all know, flooded with cheap porn.
Solidarity with Santa Ragione, the sooner devs find a way to move away from the monopoly of Steam the better.

Arcadia is a real formative playtext for me. Such a precise and well structured work. RIP

Exciting news! Thanks to our sale, we've rocketed all the way up to over 4,900 paying subscribers. This means we can cross another goal, a regular columnist, off our list. We plan to sort out the exact specifics in our own time, but for now, who do you think would be a good fit?
