NEW: The commutation Trump issued to David Gentile wipes away all further fines & restitution.

Gentile had been sentenced to 7 years for his role in a $1.6B scheme that defrauded thousands of investors.

Prosecutors had been seeking $15.5M in forfeiture.

This is closer to the truth than modslop or progslop buuuuut educational polarization is real. Even in the South there are gains to be had with college-educated whites, especially those located in inner suburbs.
Real heads know southern white people are irredeemable and swings in public opinion have very little to do with campaign messaging.

“Progslop” is the assertion southern white people would vote for socialists if they heard their message about universal healthcare.

“Modslop” is the assertion Dems could win southern white people if they spent their whole campaigns reacting to Republican talking points.

An underappreciated part of American democratic erosion is that America simply hasn't done anything meaningful for at least the last 30 years because there's no mechanism for turning popular will into policy without deferring to the lords of several dozens veto-gates along the way.
5 years of seeing your friends get arrested and threatened for practicing their first amendment rights, plus a lifetime of gerrymandering, a useless Congress, and multiple popular vote loser presidents. Many Americans under 30 have never meaningfully experienced democracy.

What a sleazy defense of honest critiques, a transparent attempt at a validation of the editorial dept.'s sins. A lot of us share a view that groveling before power, sanewashing, elitism, etc. is a challenge to our values, not our views.
For my part, I would say that questioning the framing of some Times stories—for example, the highlighting of Trump’s putative emotions or the foregrounding of what he says (even when, as is often the case, what he says is false)—is not an indication that I want my “views validated.”

"orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

Union forces had suffered some 5,800 casualties but inflicted twice that on the rebels. When a chaplain asked General Thomas whether the dead should be sorted and buried by state in the new military cemetery, the Virginian who stayed loyal replied "Mix 'em up. I'm tired of states' rights.” (21

You as the reader are left to decide whether or not his past track record of political imagination is either useful or realistic based on his previous positions.
Dear Fellow Americans:

Please stop thinking about the ICC.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
I can't imagine campaigning on this, but if grave breaches become operational policy and other war crimes are routinely pardoned when/if prosecuted, joining the ICC seems much more reasonable than my previous belief that we'd hold our own accountable.

Refusing to follow a “kill the survivors of the previous strike who are clearly hors de combat” order SHOULD BE significantly more clear-cut than refusing one due to “this entire operation is unlawful because citing inherent Article II authority is insufficient.”

There must be accountability.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.
