14. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Not as interesting as the original (and the climax isn't nearly as strong), but a good sequel. The Warrens were frauds, but these events make for some good stories.

13. The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

A solid if unspectacular adaptation of the best chapter of the definitive vampire novel with an ending that doesn't really fit into the text. It’s not a great film, but I like it a lot.

12. It Comes at Night (2017)

You know, I expected a lot more from this one. Turns out the real horror is the bad decisions you make after some random dude breaks into your house.

I reviewed Mamoru Hosoda's Scarlet for Endless Mode!

What if Hamlet was an anime girl whose dad didn't suck? What if Claudius built a wall around heaven? What if this Said Something? I have some answers the movie doesn't:
Scarlet Offers Complicated Answers To Simple Questions
While Scarlet is another visual stunner from Mamoru Hosoda, its attempts at answering big questions about modern conflict fall short.

11. Alien 3: The Assembly Cut (2003)

My wife hated this one, but agreed to give it another shot because I'm pretty high on it. She liked it much better the second time. Some absolutely incredible visuals, great performances from Weaver, Dance, Dutton... really everyone. Better than its reception.

It's time again as a notable Italian-American to note Christopher Columbus was an absolute piece of shit human who didn't land anywhere near this actual country so why the fuck should he stop the mail for the whole day

Anyway, Happy Indigenous People's Day, y'all

10. The Descent (2005)

Not Neil Marshall's best horror joint, I don't think (we'll get there), but a stone cold classic that hits every single time. Crazy to think that this is only the second film he directed.

Just play the original, imo. I think the added stuff in Royal (especially the new ending) actually makes it worse. It feels stapled on, not like a natural addition.

9. You're Next (2011)

One of my favorite home invasion flicks. Tense, funny, gore-y, inventive, extremely well-plotted, tight. Sharni Vinson plays one of the all-time Final Girls. Wingard directs the hell out of this.

STEPHANOPOULOS: I didn't insinuate anything. I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50k as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024. You did not answer the question. Thank you for your time.

Not gonna surprise anybody, but my view has always been "I write criticism for me, not some hypothetical person" and saying things like "it's not for me" is cowardly.

It is your job, as a critic, to have a fucking opinion, not try to guess what other people will like.
