After reporting the news, games media must now grapple with what the call to boycott Xbox means for us. I wrote about why we must and how we can orient games writing towards liberation. Games nor words alone will save us, but we can as individuals express solidarity and possibility in all we do.

if they figure out how to make the character walk at a consistent speed and explain some mechanics better in the full thing i think there really could be something there! big wait and see

beyond tech performance though it's editing and pacing of line delivery that just kills the writing and vocal performances. sounds like they got some good VAs and direction going into this so that would really be a let down!

Played the Opus Prism Peak demo. Feels like it could be one of Thee photography video games but it is in such a rough state that I wouldn't want to actually play more than these 20 minutes of it. Idk how this could run on S2 with how loud my fans were for a very choppy experience.

What's the worst game you finished/rolled credits on?

(games media folks, it can't be something you were assigned to review; this has to be something you subjected yourself to of your own free will)

anxious to see how this one will feel looking back from the wide release next year

I reviewed Mamoru Hosoda's Scarlet for Endless Mode!

What if Hamlet was an anime girl whose dad didn't suck? What if Claudius built a wall around heaven? What if this Said Something? I have some answers the movie doesn't:
Scarlet Offers Complicated Answers To Simple Questions
While Scarlet is another visual stunner from Mamoru Hosoda, its attempts at answering big questions about modern conflict fall short.

it is vital, vital, for the health of our society, that peter thiel not be allowed to read berserk

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

a fake quote being attributed to zohran mamdani is igniting the pro-palestine left.

he never said arresting netanyahu would make him a trumpian fascist. that phrase was posted by an account known for using extreme rhetoric to accuse mamdani of effectively saying that as a result of him softening.
image circulating claiming to attribute a fake quote to mamdani. text reads:
dec. 2024: “as mayor of nyc i would arrest benjamin netanyahu”
sept. 2025: “arresting netanyahu would make me a trumpian fascist.” - this second quote has in big letters over it the words “fake quote.” post from the originator of the phrase. text reads:

@zei squirrel
here you have it side by side. Zohran in December 2024, when he was running in the primary, pledging that he will definitely arrest Netanyahu. Then fast forward to Zohran in September 2025, after he won the primary, and suddenly arresting Netanyahu makes you a Trumpian fascist:

Screening was on the 7th and it was…weird…to see this film’s bold statement for world peace be "children shouldn't die,” which can be controversial if you're Ms Rachel but this movie's only real agent of evil is Gertrude and she has like 2 lines in the whole film. here’s what this review is about:
by portraying conflict as inherently cyclical, as fundamentally rooted in an interpersonal and emotional desire for revenge, Hosoda abandons any materiality to oppression in our world. Let’s not pretend 20,000 children have been killed because of a desire for revenge after October 7. Sure, maybe revenge motivates some conscripted teenage soldiers. Are they the ones who aim for babies? Or is it just the emotions of the aristocracy that matter? Even then, who is owed forgiveness and who has been wronged are contested among our literati of pundits, comedians, and staff writers whose private high schools you can find boastfully listed under their Wikipedia bios

Also really appreciate the costuming, especially stoics cape making his sillouhette, compared to how the one piece adaptation approached making animated outfits real (poorly)

Gorgeous film with some stand out bad CG but I would love to see them do 2 and 3 with the major script revisions those movies need
theautumnwright.bsky.social
I think this movie has a lot of good lessons as is but you could also make an abolitionist reading of it if it didn’t do the “actually there is ONE bad Other that you just have to kill to make world peace happen”

Still trying to figure out what they’re doing making Astrid’s parents white with her casting

I know lighting outdoors at night can be tricky but surely some of the cg budget could’ve gone to solving that in this one
