I also find the series fascinating from a design POV because so much of each Mafia game is a response to other games in genre (or in their own publisher's portfolio) but they still end up feeling unique.
I feel like I could write an essay on the purposeful unwieldiness of each game's driving model.

I am liking Mafia: The Old Country a lot more than I expected, but it does really feel like a game that was going to be open world at one point. And while I actually like the linearity of the story and how lean it feels, it's hard not to be distracted by the remnants of that game design in places.
