i mean this is the point i am constantly making. people want to live in an economy where *their* labor is in high demand, but *other people's* labor is in low demand. this is because people really like *service*--not just goods that substitute for service, but service by another human
I don’t remember who it was, maybe @redderbeanpaste.bsky.social?, who pointed out all those “it’s so cheap and convenient!” you hear from expats is because there are a bunch of lowly paid workers who are ‘invisible’

What's so hilariously stupid about Jain's statement is, if someone takes controversial stands and still manages to win (this isn't moneyball, WAR doesn't matter), that makes them a good politician. They're maximizing the utility of their office, not their electoral success.
when we said “defer electoral strategy to the actual politicians running for actual offices” we meant “after calculating wins above replacement somehow”

“We should change the rules when I don’t win”
Sean McVay advocates for a rule change that would treat backward passes during two-point conversion attempts the same as fumbles; such a rule would have wiped out last night's game-tying play.

also like. we did. the us is scattered with new deal monumental architecture
It's easy to dunk on liberals with something like 'why can't liberalism build anything as interesting as Soviet towers or Mussolini's monuments' but the more interesting question is the opposite, why does everyone with strong opinions on monumental architecture turn out to be politically insane.

It was extremely successful! Strongest recovery in the world, best labor market in generations, benefits heavily distributed towards the low end, real income growth. And he tried endlessly to sell it. But there’s something structurally broken that can’t be solved by “better speeches”
it's kind of funny from a economic policy perspective, Bidenomics was actually fairly successful (full employment, IRA + other state-driven investment)

he just... never really managed to figure out how to sell any of it with comms
Pretty sure a president who could communicate well and wasn’t a bazillion years old could have explained to the public why this is Actually Good.

it is extremely funny that the American populace unironically treated the era of seeing of "help wanted" signs as a bad sign
I think the direction of travel matters. from 2020-22 we had a) the most generous welfare state in US history b) the tightest labor market in 60 years, and now both are gone and we are right back to ~2014 ish job market except interest rates are high

Everyone’s like “oh consumer sentiment is bad because everyone is upset about Trump and tariffs” but it was nearly as bad a few years ago when Biden was president and there was no prospect of tariffs. And then about half the country WANTED Trump to be president.
IMO you're not recognizing that these sentiment polls are mainly measuring future expectations. People feel the economy is bad because: layoffs increasing, tariffs beginning to impact, healthcare costs increasing, mega corporations getting richer and more powerful...etc. Not "today's impact on me"
