an intro note to pin to my profile:

Hello! I’m a political columnist & editor. I have left-wing views but I value independence and critique actors and ideas across the political spectrum — including those on my side. It's okay if you don't always agree with me; I often don't agree with myself.
I keep wondering why these people don't feel that these rituals are an affront to their dignity. I don't care how much I agree with a leader, if they desired to be worshipped I'd be out, not only on political grounds, but also on visceral self-respect grounds.

Make Americans experience Shame Again
*Chris Rufo* warns X is making the right too conspiratorial:

"Americans can stick to...empirical reality or...follow conspiracy theories... For the Right, the danger is that an increasingly large fraction of our political coalition is choosing the second path"

would like to add that this guy is insulting the real meaning of street smarts, which is not fabricating evidence, but exercising caution and common sense.
When challenged on his claim that migrants are voting:
"Listen, I grew up on the streets. I’m a street guy. I get the buzz.
You wanna know the truth? That’s the truth. You wanna say, “Where’s the evidence?” You’re not gonna find evidence, OK?""

My bigotry is all the evidence I need!

Good question, and I'm curious if it has to do with nationalization of oil assets that were previously controlled by US multinationals?
I am genuinely confused by the idea that Venezuela is "stealing our Oil, Land, and Other Assets." It is batshit, but usually these things have some sort of meaning in the MAGAverse - does anyone know?

good stat, and also a bad stat.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

Senator Sheehy, I agree.
After briefing on strikes off Venezuela, Sen. Sheehy says “if we're going to question the legal process and the procedural process to target bad guys that this administration is using, then all of you better start cracking open every single Obama kinetic strike”

My mom has a picture of herself at six, taking the oath that made her part of a country that now gleefully torments children just like her. Both the picture and the truth break her heart.

We have failed each other for 250 years, but we don’t have to. We can become what we have always claimed to be.

Requiring temporary visitors to surrender five years of social media to the U.S. sends the message that the American commitment to free speech is pretense. This simply is not the behavior of a country confident in its freedoms.

It's a threat to free speech around the world and must be opposed.
Foreign tourists could be required to disclose 5 years of social media histories under Trump administration plan

Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."

The issue is that opposition to "hate" requires substantiation and substantive, even if minimalist, political commitments. This necessarily entails being at least somewhat divisive, especially in an era in which the party ruling the government is, without exaggeration, friendly with neo-Nazis.
