we still haven't moved past the double meaning problem here---the people who want Zohran to be "tougher on antisemitism" really mean "silent on Israeli genocide."
WELKER: What is your message to Jewish New Yorkers who feel you won't be tough enough in your response to antisemitism?

MAMDANI: That I am looking forward to being the next mayor and fulfilling the commitment I've made to Jewish New Yorkers to not only protect them but to celebrate and cherish them

Here's an example of the danger of doing pure vibes analysis

That is a good thing in the abstract, but no "thing" has happened here. There are no firm commitments or negotiations, it's just effectively feeling each other out & it's in both parties' interests to extend good will. Easy to do in this moment. & classic Trump behavior.

to be clear I think it’s good when the good guys successfully manipulate the malevolent idiot king into doing marginally better things

Add to that that Zohran is exceptionally good at connecting with people and clearly knew how to butter Trump up by telling him that he won Trump voters. I'm sure he tried to make the case that they have shared interests and winked at him and it made Trump feel all fuzzy inside. But it's ephemeral.

To be clear: this is very amusing and going to make some fodder for some good social media posts for Zohran. But this is also standard Trump behavior -- he often gets chummy with people across the political spectrum, especially if he feels they wield some kind of power.

Q: would you feel comfortable living in NYC under a Mamdani administration ?

TRUMP: I would. I really would.

He needs Gov Hochul and Assembly Speaker Hestie to help him pass state legislation - and Hestie explicitly conditioned supporting Mamdani on not endorsing challenges to other Democrats.

Looks to be pretty explicit quid pro quo for getting legislation passed.
