As I was reading this I was thinking about how useful it is to make a distinction between what seems “polite” or “calm” vs what actually is effective de-escalation.
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

800 people at Whittier International Elementary right now to coordinate ICE resistance. EIGHT HUNDRED, at one little school.

Recall there are only 2,000 ICE agents in the entire metro. Puny!

You know how people are like "well we should just have a general strike it's simple" and then us folks who've done labor stuff are like "cute yeah try pulling that off without unions"

Well
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

Democrats are simultaneously beginning to refer to ICE and CBP agents as "poorly trained."

This message comes from leadership. They're trying to use it as a substitute for dismantling ICE and CBP and imprisoning their current employees. Don't fall for it; don't take any Dem seriously who uses it.

seen enough things to say this stuff is absolutely monitored for and on any random day you might be the example they decide to make. if you’re lucky, your name and photo will just get circulated to thousands of law enforcement agencies.
can folks just be chill and not talk about doing violence to the government in other people's threads on bluesky dot com?

there's a real inverse relationship between how big folks are talking on here and how seriously I take them as someone ready for when the shit hits the fan.

NEW

An initially-secret report for Customs and Border Patrol in 2013 found:

In many vehicle shooting cases, the “driver was attempting to flee from the agents who intentionally put themselves into the exit path of the vehicle, thereby … creating justification for the use of deadly force.”

Oh, look. From 2014:

“Border Patrol agents have deliberately stepped in the path of cars apparently to justify shooting at the drivers [in] 67 cases that resulted in 19 deaths.”

You can’t reform that culture.

Ross was in Border Patrol in this period (2007-2015).

Border Patrol's use of deadly force criticized in report
An independent review of U.S. Border Patrol shootings criticizes the agency for 'lack of diligence' in its investigations and suggests that agents' tactics sometimes create a pretext to open fire.

They're already doing, like 90% of what they're capable of doing already. They're having to relocate CPB assets to MN because they're already stretched thin. The only serious escalation card they can play is the Insurrection Act, which is a VERY dangerous thing for them to use, and they know that.

Every one of these announcements reads to me as "we don't have enough people and supplies to occupy more than one city at a time"
Also: " Border Patrol officials also plan to send all nonlethal weapons housed in Chicago to Minnesota, according to the documents."
"The Department of Homeland Security plans to pause operations in Chicago — where Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol official, has led controversial arrest efforts — to support the immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota."

Bari Wiess will not say what she wants not because she doesn't want it, or because she doesn't know that she wants it, but because she wants to appear as if she doesn't want it. This makes her, fundamentally, a despicable liar and a detestable coward, and it is morally correct to hate her for it
Bari will never explicitly say "it's fine for masked agents of the state to murder civilians." But she will say, again and again, that the people who are upset about masked agents of the state murdering civilians are hysterical, illegitimate, censorious liars.

This is why it's also important to protest outside the federal buildings they occupy. When you protest outside a DHS building, they have to defend that building. That means fewer agents are available to terrorize communities.
They don't have capacity to terrorize more than 2-3 cities at a time.

Which means they rotate teams to new cities without relief.

Which means consistent resistance by fresh activists in each new city will break them over time.

Which means if you're city's not occupied, rest up and get ready.
