Court battle over surveillance footage at the Broadview ICE detention center reaches new levels of kafkaesque absurdity: The DOJ claimed it *couldn't afford* hard drives to put video footage on. Plaintiffs bought THE US GOVERNMENT hard drives. ICE "lost" them.

Government Loses Hard Drives It Was Supposed to Put ICE Detention Center Footage On

Working artists/designers didn't "prepare for" the airbrush or digital typesetting or Quark or whatever. You evaluate whether it's a thing and learn it, or not. "Do it ASAP so my boss can make a buck even though it doesn't work yet" has always been fraught

I'm going to continue to push back on the "you have to ~believe in~ amd ~prepare for~ AI" stuff. Working slobs like myself didn't have to "prepare for" computers or internet, either it becomes a thing in your industry or it doesn't.

Interesting detail:
In trying to frame Leqaa Kordia sending money to her family in Palestine as supporting Hamas, DHS claims she's financially aided "individuals living in nations hostile to the US."

Are they conflating Hamas with Palestine — and also inadvertently recognizing Palestine as a state?
First, the Trump administration said it detained Leqaa Kordia for an immigration violation.

Then, they used her participation in a pro-Palestine Columbia protest to justify it.

Now, they say she supports Hamas because she sent money to family in Palestine.

She has been detained for nearly a year:
Why Has This Columbia University Protester Been in ICE Detention for Nearly a Year?
Leqaa Kordia's family worries about her health after she was briefly hospitalized last week. DHS refused to give them information about her condition and she is still 'very sick.'

Oh yeah! K.A. Applegate is a wonderful person who wrote some of the most terrifying fiction in its class—I’m still thinking about some scenes from Remnants, like when:

- The asteroid impacts Earth and all the windows blow out in SF and a fireball wipes everything out.

- The baby.

- THE BABY.

Ring and Nest helped normalize American surveillance and turned us into a nation of voyeurs
People who own Ring, Nest and other Web-connected cameras say they've reshaped their daily awareness around what's going on at home. But all that added vigilance has come at a surprising cost.

Yes!! When they mentioned at the very beginning that the camera "was inactive due to being disconnected," and then we saw these pictures, I immediately thought the same!

These connected devices are non-stop data engines, supplying data to their real owners. We never own "our" data.

But comms at Ring assured me it’s not mass surveillance 🙄
Here's a hidden secret of doorbell cameras, as revealed by Nancy Guthrie's kidnapping. They're recording even when you don't know it, and sending video to company servers even when you don't pay

Girls are bad at math but also only men can write sweeping narrative non fiction pieces for Important Magazines.

Make it make sense.
the people who spread the “female brains are bad at math and spatial reasoning” lies should be tried at the Hague
Another fun wrinkle from that period (that might still exist): I was good at math and loved it and then my geometry teacher told me that I'd probably struggle because female brains were bad at spatial thinking. I kept loving math & being good at it but assumed that would end so I ended it first.

I genuinely feel a kind of low-key anger at the status quo and it's like "you should care about other people" and more "why is it that even when it directly benefits people, a lot of people don't care about other people (in some capacity) until they are affected by those benefits."
