"Our standing rule is: If one of us brings up using GenAI in any of our work, then it's safe to assume we've been assimilated by The Thing and should be burned alive by Kurt Russell," said a game design consultant in the US.
Over 50% of game developers now think generative AI is bad for the industry, a dramatic increase from just 2 years ago: 'I'd rather quit the industry than use generative AI'
The latest GDC survey also found that managers are more likely to use generative AI than their employees.

If you live in the US, call your fucking representatives and tell them that repealing Section 230 is a horrible idea. If Section 230 is gone, you can kiss Bluesky goodbye.
Reminder that they're still trying to repeal section 230 (thereby making platform holders like bsky legally responsible for content posted by their users etc etc)

There is still a need for you to blow up your rep's phones on this if you enjoy being able to do things like "post" or "have an porn"

I think about how when they sang La Marseillaise they were still in the midst of a war they did not know they were going to win.
You ever stop and think about CASABLANCA? You ever stop and think about "Welcome back to the fight, this time, I know our side will win?" You ever think about a bar full of people defiantly singing La Marseillaise, played by a soundstage full of Jewish refugees? You ever think about CASABLANCA??????

A Big Five editor I interviewed

“It’s impossible to get reviews. And the reviews you do get are not moving the needle. Literary fiction is review-driven. So if you're not getting reviews, or the reviews you’re getting are not getting eyes on them, it’s like, well, then what are you supposed to do?”

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

I'm not especially opposed to driverless cabs, but I'm fucked if I'm giving up my ancestral British right to cross the road anywhere if it's safe for me to do so. "Jaywalking" isn't a thing or a crime here, techbros, so your magic cars will have to learn to deal with that.
Politics London discussing driverless taxis casually referring to “jaywalking pedestrians”.

Jaywalking is not a thing in UK law.

Transport for London and Government had better not be asleep at the wheel on this.

if this has to be a news story it should be that a qualified and competent doctor has been run out of a struggling NHS simply because she is transgender
The BBC reporting on Beth Upton’s current employment situation is definitely not in the public interest, and it is insane how much the British press freely get away with harassing her for the crime of simply living her life existing as a trans person in the UK.

"She also suggested "unrealistic images and expectations on social media" had misled children", the "unrealistic image" being that you can transition and have a happy and long life, but since Cass sees every transition as a failure she doesn't believe that is possible
Hillary Cass both sides-ing the “trans debate” dismisses the material power imbalance

- One side is pushing for restrictions, removal of care, & the eradication of trans kids
- The other is pushing for access to care and legal protections

Those are not symmetrical in terms of power or impact

A less transphobic press might start asking "How does driving a doctor out of Scotland help cut NHS wait times? Why is Scotland better with fewer doctors? Which other minority staff would you get rid of?"
Every single person involved in this hate campaign and everyone who has supported them - Anas Sarwar, for example - needs to be run out of public life the way they've run Dr Upton out the NHS. Being trans isn't a risk factor for people around you; this obsessive hate absolutely is.
Susan Smith of For Women Scotland is quoted in this piece saying that Dr Upton leaving the NHS will be "a relief to female patients."

The employment tribunal found that Upton had done nothing wrong! She was completely innocent of any kind of harassment!

We are living in a world where we have safe and effective vaccines against some of the most detrimental diseases in history.

And yet people choose not to give them to their children and protect them and others.

Measles could have been eradicated by now.
A reminder that measles cannot be treated, it can only be prevented.

It is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and can cause blindness, deafness and life-threatening lung and brain infections.

"how much important stuff could we have had instead, for the same money" is the correct frame for evaluating university spending

public universities' mission is for research and teaching — not spending money on those, while diverting it to tools of dubious utility, should be shocking
My employer, Univ. Colorado will pay OpenAI $2M/year under the banner of “equity”. That’s 54 full scholarships / year. Plus, our IT will be able to read our chatGPT logs, and our chats can be requested under public records law. No thanks. Surveillance is not equity
