pw announcement: Alexandra Cooper at Quill Tree Books has acquired North American rights to two graphic novels by Wendy Xu, one middle grade and one YA. Yarrow and the Burning Mountain, due out in 2027, is about a young goblin who, to protect her way of life, takes on her evil estranged cousin who is attempting to mass produce her village's special pottery. A Ghost Is a Wish, due in 2028, features a teen who sees the ghost of a classmate's sister and starts to hang out with an annoying boy and his ghost-hunting friends to escape life with her controlling mother. Linda Camacho at Gallt & Zacker Literary Agency did the deal. panels are sample art from both books

Become more than the rind of yourself, and you’ll have employment yet for the rest of your days.

Wendy Xu thanks for your passionate comment. I am involved in the media industry as a producer, and know many creatives. Unfortunately, WB was going to go to a buyer regardless and I didn't want it to be Paramount Skydance because of what has happened to CBS becoming politicized. I have multiple friends who are diverse directors that have sold their films to Netflix and it gave them a platform for distribution when others would not. The industry has shifted and people are being forced to make films independently and then sell them to a distributor or streamer. There is no more creative freedom than making a film independently. We just need more people to see the value of storytelling and philanthropy to invest in making films. Like when I hosted Lucy Liu for a Rosemead screening two weeks ago, she and the producers made that film happen. Hopefully Netflix or a streamer will acquire and distribute it after the theater run. But that's how their film gets seen. The long-term reality is that consolidation is happening, and the business model for film-making has changed because people aren't going to theaters as much and studios can't make money and stay in business the way they used to.

I love Netflix, because they rely on data and not feelings to decide what gets made and seen. That's why you see such diverse content from Korean Dramas to crime thriller documentaries. This is why they have dominated entertainment for the past decade. Hollywood studio execs have been biased and gatekeeping based "intuition" and "instinct" for as long as the industry has existed. They only greenlight what they like or want made, not necessarily what fans the want. For every Running Man or Madame Web or Accountant 2, they could have taken a chance on a dozen diverse filmmakers. More times than not, their hunches are terrible. But Netflix knows what people are actually watching and engaging with. They know what the audience really wants, not what they say they want. Meanwhile studio execs talked about making more diverse films for the diverse American audience, but we're all eagerly awaiting the one or two movies a year they make for us. In terms of what’s understood to be socially acceptable behavior, normalizing the filming/taking pictures of people in public who are minding their own business (and putting it online) is one of the worst developments of the past 15 years.
