it's wild how anything anyone said about what was happening in Chicago in the fall was ignored. it was so obvious that ICE/CBP was crushing small businesses and the impact was tantamount to the early days of Covid. In this thread I addressed JB not talking about this enough

The US positioning a lot of military assets in the Middle East does not stand out as much as the US positioning military assets in the Caribbean.

And yet, as with the buildup that led to attacking Venezuela, this is a lot of military assets to position and then not use.
Wow.

"The more the regime cultivates a vibe of strength and inevitability, the more room it has to operate. The more people think the regime is weak and failing, the more likely they are to say no, drag their feet, refuse demands, and resist."
Trump can't steal the midterms.

I say that not as a call for complacency, but to right-size worries. Authoritarianism partially exists in our heads. Excessive fear plays into their hands.

Be vigilant but don't panic. Don't grant the regime more power than it actually has.

Which is 6X more than the cancer, Alzheimer, diabetes, and heart disease cures they've cut to pay for it.

There must be trials. Not as an emotive aspiration, rhetorical meme, or empty threat. A concrete plan. A dedicated special court for it. Structural legislation and prosecutors and funding and all the rest of it. Everything necessary for it can be done constitutionally. All it takes is the will.

The most striking thing is Colbert saying that CBS executives told him not to even MENTION the ban on his show.

If that's the case, it raises the question whether that demand was the FCC's or CBS's.

I kinda doubt that Carr would ask for that. I don't doubt that CBS would.

A further development:

CBS responds to "THE LATE SHOW." It says Colbert was not prohibited from broadcasting his interview with Rep. James Talarico. Rather the show was provided with legal guidance and... well, just read it. Via @brianstelter.bsky.social
