This lovely article about Duane and his family. Duane was an artist, activist, and fought against the stigma of being gay and having AIDS (which, y'all). Also, the tragedy of his quilt and its rebirth!

One of the best disability tips I've gotten is: if you have limited energy, do the fun/pleasurable thing first. If you always try to work before you play, you might never get to the play part. Pleasure is just as important as productivity & sometimes MORE important

I do want to clarify that, while there is absolutely no question that this change is catastrophic, immunization requirements are set by states and AHIP has previously committed to covering vaccines recommended until the current ACIP recommendations through the end of 2026.
This is the worst case scenario that everybody was worried about
It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).

I do wish more journalists would spend a minute or two imagining, for the mental exercise if nothing else, that academic history is a profession rather than a hobby

I’m jumping off a bit here but this is something that always grinds me about how people treat history. Lots of people are history hobbyists, and that’s great! It is different from being a Professional Historian. Passion does not equal skills and expertise.
"knowing all sorts of details" is a sufficient qualification for a history buff

being oblivious to the latest research is not a qualification for anything
This is 100% incorrect as the explanation for why someone obsessed with Roman *military* history is not being hired.

got a real person at Gillibrand's office and it was fun to tell him how INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED IN HER I have been lately. He says "they've gotten a LOT of calls in opposition" and what that means to me is: keep calling
If you can, PLEASE PLEASE call your senators about the horrific anti-trans bills that are being worked on in the senate right now. 5 calls app has your scripts. Please do this, if you’re able. #uspolitics

Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can ‘revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere
"Bradage de la traduction, plan social invisible : Harlequin passe à l’IA"

Faites tourner, parce qu'il va falloir se battre encore plus. :/

Interesting, because I am assured by people on both side sides of the aisle that homeless people are not a part of our society, but a social nuisance to be harassed and a great societal danger to be expunged.

The year is 2035. There are three game studios left. Each one produces a game every 10 years, killing 250+ developers in the process. They all accidentally make the same game because they used genAI in preproduction. They sell 500 million units each, missing quarterly targets. Everyone is laid off.

When the NEA asked us to promise not to publish trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid authors, we told them to kick rocks. (Actually, formally, with a unanimous vote by the Board of Directors, we told them to kick rocks.) So the NEA rescinded our funding.
