but I wish it were that simple.
It's not just war around the globe, but current-gen policing in America, and basic "how do we treat each other".

Best way I can put it is how Patrick Skinner (@SkinnerPm) who is a cop but ex-USCG+CIA puts it on Twitter: "All of us matter, or none of us do."

Wherever its actual birthplace, what remains of Theia is buried on the Moon and as giant undigested slabs inside Earth’s mantle.
The Moon-forming impactor Theia originated from the inner Solar System
The Moon formed from a giant impact of a planetary body, called Theia, with proto-Earth. It is unknown whether Theia formed in the inner or outer Solar System. We measured iron isotopes in lunar sampl...

Remember those halcyon days when our country wasn’t led by a Russian intelligence asset & a passel of useful idiots? Back when American foreign policy advanced American interests & those of its allies? Back when alliances meant something & weren’t transactional? Yeah. Fun times.

the economic success of the U.S. is significantly built on the land grant universities and in particular their excellent agricultural science tradition.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

few sounds on earth are more terror inducing than the highly infectious-sounding cough of a small child with a respiratory illness
Finally boarded my plane to Oslo and I am sitting in front of a child who appears to be suffering from an acute case of plague

I guess I am being punished for something

To be fair, Neal wrote "The Baroque Cycle" longhand after a computer backup disaster ate the first five hundred pages or so.

Then he transcribed it himself in EMACS and formatted it for submission using a homebrew set of Elisp macros he wrote—

Yeah nope, that's just deranged.

It's well known that pigs can't look up.

But what if there's a direction us humans can't look in? Maybe there's a whole world just off to one side that we'll never know about. That would certainly explain where my tuppwear lids are.

If you start by saying how many people you are going to arrest, the entire operation should be enjoined. That’s not how anything should work.

Federal agents aim to arrest 5,000 people during the operation.

The stunt crew dropped him on 1 instead, to make his reaction more believable.
