A lot of people with huge follower counts have been following me lately, so I feel compelled to say this.

Hi. I'm not going to follow you back, especially if I don't recognize you. I doubt you're really here to watch me talk about packing up my books so I can move house, but you never know.

When a major media outlet openly capitulates to the political agenda of the executive branch, they are no longer part of the fourth estate.

They are state-run media.

Add Bari Weiss and CBS to the list of those who have betrayed our Republic.

when the second tape came out, right-wing Fox types spoke derisively of DNC operatives spending hundreds of hours poring over old CSPAN tapes and, nope, it was just a guy with a blog and one of his readers, who happened to have saved the tape because he couldn't believe what he heard
fun fact: lott resigned after a second tape emerged of him repeating his remark that america would have been better off if strom thurmond had been elected president. A reader of my old blog was the one who came up with that tape, which became public after I alerted a journo I knew.

all of generative AI is a project of hoping that some humans are still big enough suckers to keep producing feedstock for it

even if you consider it equivalent to a human, it's a human in a sealed box with only an Internet connection, unable to perceive anything that has not already been perceived

What a mess! Wyoming has some of the least competitive ACA markets in the country. In places like Teton County, there has often been only one ACA insurer (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming). That lack of competition drives prices way up. This is ridiculous.

I think not valuing the system *is* intentionally harming the system, though. I think they see the system as over engineered, too cautious, too expensive, too onerous on industry, and too much tilted on the cost/benefit side. They don't value the outcome of safe food.

I keep having exactly this conversation with AI proponents:

“I need it to be accurate.”

“How accurate?”

“100%”

“Uh. How about 85%? Good enough?”

“No, 100%.”

“Well, we can’t do that because [reason of the week].”

“Okay, talk to me when you can, then.”
If a key part of your job is getting information right and ferreting out falsehoods and untrustworthy sources, and the tool that’s supposed to help you do that keeps throwing you obvious errors, than yeah, you’re probably not going to *trust* it and may end up deciding it’s not all that useful.

Yeah, it’s almost as if “virtue signaling” was a good way to publicly reinforce the values and behaviors that society should find virtuous, and therefore was never a bad thing to do.
“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

How bad is it for Russia on the frontlines? They launched an attack on Dobropillia today, led by men on horseback, followed by motorbikes and quads. Ukraine’s 1st Azov Corps wiped them all out in 2 hours with artillery and drones, as well as a bunch of armoured vehicles.

It’s the horses I feel for.

i've been thinking recently about why i have a reflexive dislike of the 'comedy needs balance' line, and i think it's because political comedy is the act of saying "hey, you're not mad, the world really does look like THIS", and that doesn't need "balancing" because *the rest of society* does that

My main takeaway is not so much how it demonstrates that they know they're full of shit, because we already know that.

My main takeaway is how easy it is to catch them with the simplest follow-up, and how obvious this makes it that they're not used to being asked basic journalistic questions.

Bari’s standard for “and do so with respect” appears to be ‘Sharyn Alfonsi should have not emailed her colleagues about me refusing to meet with her after I spiked her story that had already been cleared by the actual editors and standards’
During today's editorial call, Bari Weiss doubled down on pulling the CECOT segment while lashing out at Sharyn Alfonsi:

"The only newsroom that I'm interested in running is one where we are able to have contentious disagreements about the thorniest and editorial matters, and do so with respect."

Just as he did with tariffs, Trump is abusing “national security” justifications to raise prices for the American people — in this case electricity prices.

I think it might be a little bit from column A and a bit from column B, but she's always struck me as someone whose mental model of how things work has never developed beyond the performativity of high school speech and debate as the model for how things work in the world.
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself
