I never understand the “voters are blameless and it’s impossible for anything to be their fault” idea.

“Democracy” literally means “people power.” The entire idea is that the people get to collectively make choices. And they can make bad ones.

With great power comes great responsibility, folks.

Gavin Newsom is kicking me out of the Democratic Party for being autistic.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

One of the problems with our capitalist overlords these days is they don't care about making money and profit as much as they should.
I mean that mostly sincerely: If they cared more about money than status or authority, we'd be much better off in most respects.
The thing I've never understood about cracking down on adults' access to ADHD medication is the fact that stimulants make people more productive whether they actually have ADHD or not. Shouldn't our capitalist overlords want exactly that?
then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

On Aug 24, 1869, Ohio Rep. John Bingham, principal framer of the 14th amendment, gave a remarkable speech on “Equal Rights-Impartial Suffrage,” in which he said of those who sought to reject the principal of birthright citizenship, “no greater political atrocity than this can possibly be committed.”

I have experience on both sides of this (having family members with a history of violence and untreated mental illness, and being a victim of a random stranger having a violent episode) and the frustration and anger is so real

My heart breaks for this woman and her son
San Diego family struggles with all-too-familiar cycle of mental illness
Despite passage of new laws expanding who can be forced to get help, the most needy still fall through the cracks.

If the Court arbitrarily strikes down this key part of the fourteenth amendment, I think Americans lose any moral obligation to show any allegiance to the laws enforced by a fundamentally lawless regime
Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.

This makes me think of the time I'd heard people actually did leave a state, not for taxes, but because family youtubers in California weren't gonna be able to monetize their children w/o paying them anymore (if I'm remembering right, anyway)

220 judges, including 23 appointed by Trump, have ruled that this administration’s mass detention policies are unlawful.

They are sending tens of thousands of innocent immigrants into for-profit prisons with subhuman conditions and no access to attorneys. It’s horrific.

Just wanna come back to this: the DSA, one of the largest orgs seeking to replace Establishment Dems, couldn't even *begin* to pull off a challenge to the supposedly-historically-unpopular Dem House Minority Leader.

Is it now *crystal clear* just how disconnected online narratives are from reality?

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

dred scott, in their minds, established the united states as a place of tiered citizenship and permanent inequality among americans. it was a ruling that said, in effect, that all men *were not* created equal and would *never* be treated as such.
