It's tough for folks to internalize the fact that a murder like this is the exact opposite of a sign of regime strength. Galvanizing millions of Americans into a stance of "They might murder me and that's *exactly* why I'm going to keep getting in their faces," does not end well for fascists.
Only speaking personally, but today’s execution isn’t scaring me from protecting our neighbors, as some suggest is ICE’s goal. Nor am I angry with incandescent rage, in that I know such rage is unhelpful. Rather, I feel like it has forced me to truly accept that the same fate might befall me.

So the thing is that they don’t need to manufacture an alternate reality for everyone. This isn’t about convincing society at large. They just need to enchant the people who already agree with them to continue suspending their disbelief in the righteousness of participating in violent fascism.
