At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

I was just at the store for something I forgot and this is 100% true.
my hunch is that a lot of people who don't normally cook on the regular flood the grocery store when there is bad weather approaching and they are shopping in a basically haphazard way (there were no mushrooms, for example)

Imagining what it was like to hear Rapper's Delight for the first time, since it's both a breakthrough of a new genre AND a song about things such as "there's this thing called rapping and I'm doing it," "Superman is probably gay," "my friend's mom is so bad at cooking that it gave me diarrhea"

God I hope my job doesn’t find me resokeeting this but this is 100%, without a doubt, absolutely correct. “Paying for college” is making a moral decision that your personal material status is more important than others’ lives. No qualifications. The lesser evil is still evil.
the thing about "signing up to pay for college" is they give you the same guns and send you to the same places as the guys who signed up to legally murder brown people in foreign nations and get away with it. "paying for college" is not an excuse anyone should be respecting

Sci-Fi/genre fiction snootiness content incoming. I’m watching PLUR1BUS and quite enjoying it, because it’s Vince Gilligan and his team and they are skilled craftsmen. But, and I got this feeling with The Last of Us (game and show) and kind of Game of Thrones—this plot is baby’s first [genre trope].

Dave Filoni is the ideal steward of Disney Star Wars in that he is so deeply indebted to George Lucas he hasn't really had an original idea. Everything is simply an explanation about what was happening before or after something else that mattered. That was Lucas' favorite thing, as we learned.

need more cosmopolitan chauvinism imo. to be able to go to a world city and do this without crossing a border is something you should be proud of, it means you're a great country. To want to tear it down means you are inbred provincial hog with no greater drives than envy and fear.
Best TikTok thing going is the two dudes trying food from every country without leaving NYC. If you haven’t seen them yet, it’s incredible. My favorite so far is last week’s. Legit got me emotional.

honestly feel the author was done dirty by the headline but also i think the premise is wrong: the idea that charismatic caesarism is this regime's strong point *is* in fact compatible with it being an aspirational form of totalitarianism

I think the Star Trek TNG and Better Call Saul finales are basically perfect encapsulations of their respective shows and really couldn’t be any better for what they are.

I also unironically like the Seinfeld finale.
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

guess my point is that our failure to reckon with the moral weight of the war on terror creates space for trump to do what he now does. just stopping him is vital, but not good enough.

texts about, say, vietnam, even the most milquetoast ones, tend to have a basic acknowledgment that yeah we shouldna did that. but the war on terror texts are so... morally oblivious, so ethically stunted. so unable to reckon with the evil there.

anyway, that felt relevant to share today.

I grew up in the kind of impoverished rural county where the US military recruits their cannon fodder, and I gotta say there's no reason to have any sympathy for anyone who enlists, nor has there ever been. Poor people still have agency and moral culpability. We aren't just lumpen NPCs.

look man at that point you get yourself arrested

it's not as though "signing up for the military" didnt carry risks, you just thought they'd be mortal rather than moral

uhhh yeah I can see why these childcare properties weren't eager to let in some rando dudes asking "where are the kids?"
