Again, they use language that sounds initially empowering. But the actual ideology here is that women don't belong to a larger community, but are basically just the property of a husband with no right to help or connection outside of the home.

This isn't "freedom." This is about the view that women don't deserve even basic health care. It's dehumanizing women, too, by ignoring why human birth is uniquely difficult, which is why humans don't just give birth in a closet like a cat. (Also, cat birth is not always complication-free!)

Ugh, once again we see far-right, misogynist movements repackaging themselves in language that glancingly seems "feminist" about "choice" and "freedom."

But it's not. This shit is about pushing rigid gender roles, and punishing women who "fail" at them.

Ed Whelan was Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for OLC from 2001-2004, so when he suggests that laws of war have been violated by the executive branch, that’s… something
Does Pete Hegseth have a "golden shield" against prosecution in the form of a DOJ OLC opinion? Ed Whelan thinks not.

every liberal sj maxim like "in the US, POC can't be racist against white Americans" has become entirely scavenged for tankie excuses like "you can't feel immoral prejudice against people with privileges" and "expectations of behavior are punitive unless they are & always have been applied equally"

The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

2025 experience: Being in a theater & a decent chunk of the crowd approvingly cheers the mere use of the word. You can use any word in a film, in context it can be appropriate to do so but imagine going to Django Unchained and hearing people whoop every hard R as if they were on a roller coaster.

It’s really being used heavily these days as a call-and-response for shitty people; just a quick test to see if you’re dealing with someone who is equally fed up with the expectation that you treat human beings with basic courtesy.
I really think that even most people who think language policing was a huge problem over the past 5-10 years have no patience for the disgusting little freaks who have tried to bring back "retarded" as a slur. It's just so low-rent and such a tell that the person using it is not worth your time

Michael Bohacek, a Republican state senator from Indiana who has a daughter with down syndrome, says he will vote against redistricting in Indiana after Trump used the word "retarded."

This is absolutely true. Conservatives tend to meet families of people with disabilities where they are at the moment. It allows for their message to be incredibly potent even if private schools often deny education to disabled students or they support Medicaid cuts.
Imani Barabarin has been talking for years about how many disabled folks vote for Republicans because Republicans show up at their events and speak openly about their issues, whereas Democrats rarely do. This is not some new Republican strategy, this is an old strategy. This is maintenance.
Apologies. Didn't alt-text it. Here we go.

My god, I could write a dissertation on how demented just these two paragraphs of New York Times coverage of the DC shooting are.

The details of the shooting begin with Trump sending troops to do law enforcement in a city with plummeting crime. How does that "dovetail neatly" with anything he says?

we're in the slightly odd position that Jeremey Corbyn's faction - who were quite linked up with the SWP when establishing a lot of Your Party branches - are the ones who have expelled SWP members, and Zarah Sultana's faction - who were the ones complaining of a sexist boys club - are now pro-SWP
Sultana says she would reverse the expulsions of SWP and other communists kicked out for "dual membership" in recent weeks
