Penn State really had to fire Franklin, and the buyout is probably not gonna be close to the big $50m number in the end. But the fact that Penn State had no choice is, itself, pretty damning and makes it worthwhile to zoom out a little slate.com/culture/2025...

It's very en vogue to talk about how college football is broken right now because of NIL, the portal, "The Wild West," etc.

I wrote about a related issue for @slate.com. The twin killers of paranoia and desperation, which created the Franklin situation on both ends slate.com/culture/2025...
Penn State Just Fired a Good Football Coach. The Reason Why Is Bleak.
The school needed to fire James Franklin—and that’s a damning indictment of the sport.

For Businessweek’s November issue, I have a feature about the high-fee premium credit card war being waged by American Express and Chase for the hearts, minds, and swipes of America’s affluent supershoppers. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

To me the funniest thing in the NFL right now is that the Steelers (4-1) are finally favored over the Ravens (1-5) to win the AFC North, but the margin is so small that it's basically like they're 1.5-point favorites in a head-to-head

The AFC is a mess this season lol. Colts and Steelers duking it out for the 1 seed lmao

even WITHIN the streamers. it makes redzone way less interesting. oh let's cut to some raiders game now against whichever other 1-4 team they played yesterday, i don't even recall
alexkirshner.com
on the other hand, i didn't cancel redzone yet!

Started to notice this yesterday, assume others have pointed it out but I've missed it: All these international games and MNF doubleheaders have really diluted Sunday afternoons. Pretty rare for there to be more than two cool NFL games at a time

never ever gonna happen, i'd be beyond stunned

i would have to see the contract and be a lawyer but you will note that there are lots of coaches w/ buyout offsets and none working on those kinds of salaries
alexkirshner.com
It doesn't happen that way

Penn State not saying anything about any deals they made with Franklin complicates this, BUT: Franklin could be a reallllllllllllly good candidate for a lot of jobs if he takes a below-market but justifiable salary (PSU pays him the difference) and makes the school direct the difference elsewhere

Happy for everyone in Canada who's getting to enjoy the Mariners—who are just a short drive from the border—as a sort of "national team" during this postseason. Baseball isn't just an American pastime and we forget that sometimes

scans to me like him sticking up for former colleague stefanski
alexkirshner.com
yes that is what is going to happen
alexkirshner.com
Imo what's happening here is that Stefanski is respected and other coaches in football are gobsmacked that the Browns have saddled him with a really terrible collection of QBs, from the nasty man on down

I'll bet he is!
