i know house of cards is gauche now, but one of the first real "oh something is very wrong here" moments I had about the press was when the press was doing 'tee hee how naughty' bits about kate mara's character (the journalist at not-buzzfeed)
yep. also really can't overstate how much nuzzi is very much the product of an environment that rewards amoral ambition and frowns on people who sincerely believe anything

The Trump regime granted the suspected shooter asylum earlier this year.

Now they are taking his alleged crime out on all Afghan nationals seeking entrance to the US.

Another ban. Another excuse for violence and deportation.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

So the editor of New York Magazine said there was no bias or ethical problems with Olivia's articles?

Does he still think that?

They should retract all of her stories

I've made about $17k all year, INCLUDING my adjunct teaching job.

There is this idea that anyone working in the arts has wealthy family help, and sure some do, but a lot of us are simply poor. If you enjoy someone's work please pay them for it. It is not greedy to want to be paid for your labor.
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Thinking "impressions" and "user reviews" are real is a true "dead internet" flag. Before 201X, journos understood the limits of these measures and their place in the web ecology. But then a new generation of rich kid dipshit started getting work in media and twitter impressions = nielsen captures.
This is innumerate nonsense. An average of 1.1 million people were watching The Simpsons throughout its entire thirty-minute broadcast according to a third-party data company contracted to measure viewership by Disney. Somebody, no way to know who, hit the play button 1.7 million times on Twitter

I don't think it's even "hit the play button", just "had this post cross their timeline"...
last I heard, they weren't reporting the actual video view count separately from the tweet impression count anymore, unless they do inside the owner's analytics. I doubt TAH has an actual view count

The last God’s Not Dead movie made $1.1m at the box office, almost certainly less than it cost to make, certainly less than it cost to make and market. They’re making another one, not because people want it, but because they need you to know they hate you.

this should go without saying but if you were one of the lucky few we did get out of Afghanistan during the withdrawal and we got you out because you'd been working with us, deportation back is likely a death sentence.

You ever think about how if Sean Duffy did this as a Democrat there would be people burning effigies of him in front of airports to protest “nanny state liberalism”?
Sean Duffy, the U.S. transportation secretary, has been urging people for the past week to dress and comport themselves better as a way of restoring “civility” to air travel. On Tuesday, he added another item to his list of concerns: the quality of the snacks handed out on commercial flights.

This is called “chain refoulment” and it’s illegal under both U.S. and international law. And the State Department and ICE know very well what Ghana is doing and simply don’t care.
ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

Markwayne Mullin on healthcare: "What the president would like to do is say, hey, if you take care of yourself -- you don't smoke, you don't dip, you're not drinking, you're not overweight, you're working out -- then you should pay less than the guy that obviously is not taking care of himself."

Obama was in his 40s, so was Bill Clinton, W was 54, just in the last 10 years have Presidents been old (and people could have voted for the 59 year old)

I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.
